sharing economy income
Sharing economy income is income you earn through digital platforms or apps by sharing assets or providing services for a fee.
Sharing economy income can include payments you receive for:
> ride sourcing, taxi, limousine or delivery services
> short term accommodation or property sharing
> renting or hiring out assets (for example, vehicles, equipment or car parking)
> creating or selling digital content, digital goods or online entertainment
> task based, freelance or on demand services arranged through online platforms
What you need to know
Income you earn through the sharing economy is generally assessable and must be declared in your tax return, even if:
> you earn the income part time, casually or irregularly
> you do not have an Australian business number (ABN)
> no tax was withheld from the payments you received.

Sharing economy platforms provide us with information about income earned through their services. This information does not automatically pre fill your tax return, so you must ensure you manually include all sharing economy income when you lodge.
We use this information to help ensure tax returns are complete and accurate. If you don’t include all required sharing economy income, you may need to amend your tax return, and penalties or interest may apply.
How you report sharing economy income depends on how you earn it:
> Individuals without an ABN - Include your income in the ‘Other’ income section of your individual tax return.
> Individuals with an ABN (sole traders) - Include the income as business income in the Business and professional items section of your individual tax return.
> Companies - Include the income as assessable income in the company tax return.
For more information, including examples of what counts as sharing economy income, go to the ATO website and search for QC 71315.
You can also speak with your tax agent if you need help understanding your obligations.

Centrelink Age Pension payment rates, cut-off limits to change for 2.5 million in weeks

People on the Age Pension will see their payment rates, along with the cut-off limits under the income and assets tests increase from March 20.

Australians receiving the Age Pension will see their payments increase in a few weeks, along with the cut-off limits for the income and asset tests. This means more than 2.5 million age pensioners will be able to earn slightly more money and have higher-value assets than before.

From March 20, a number of changes to social security payments, rates and limits will kick in as part of regular indexation. This will see more than five million people receive more money in their bank accounts each fortnight.

Single pensioners will receive an extra $22.20 per fortnight, with the total rate increasing to $1,200.90. Couples will see a $16.70 lift in their payments each, with the amount each partner receives going up to $905.20.
