Greetings and Salutations Vault Dwellers!

It’s movie talk Thursday. This week we have:

MOVIE: Black Dog
RELEASED: 1998
GENRE: Action
PLOT: The film tells the story of a trucker and ex-con (Patrick Swayze) who is manipulated into transporting illegal arms.

A prime example of the B grade fun of the 80s/90s action film era. Meat Loaf plays an over the top villain and you wouldn’t think action scenes involving big trucks could be that entertaining but somehow they are. Swayze put out a few solid action films during this time (Road House being the highlight) and Black Dog is a lot of fun.

BAND SPOTLIGHT
This week we have:

BAND: A Swarm of the Sun ()
COUNTRY: Sweden 🇸🇪
GENRE: post rock/metal, ambient, doom
FOR FANS OF: we lost the sea, solstafir, cult of luna, kauan, the ocean
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: the woods, the pyre, infants, refuge

Long songs, slow builds, gloomy atmospheres. A band for the patient listener. While every album is solid, The Woods is a perfect 10/10 for me. Something truly special about that one. Would love them to tour Australia at some stage.

Greetings and Salutations Vault Dwellers!

It’s movie talk Thursday. This week we have:

MOVIE: Upgrade
RELEASED: 2018
GENRE: Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller
PLOT: directed by Leigh Whanell, the film follows Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) who ends up paralysed and loses his wife during a mugging. When a billionaire implants a chip in his body that restores his mobility, he sets out to get vengeance.

Awesome revenge film with cyberpunk flair. Great action sequences and a nice twist to the usual revenge types like John wick and death wish.

BAND SPOTLIGHT
This week we have:

BAND: Nothingface
COUNTRY: USA 🇺🇸
GENRE: nu/alternative metal
FOR FANS OF: Spineshank, Cold, 36 Crazyfists, American Head Charge, Sevendust
SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Sleeper, Ether, Bleeder, Goldtooth, Grinning, Can’t Wait For Violence

While I was never massively into nu metal in my early days of metal discovery, there were a few bands that caught my attention. Nothingface was one of them. Fat riffs and grooves, and awesome clean (dark and grungy like Alice in chains and Pearl Jam at times) and heavy vocals from Matt Holt. They only released 4 albums in the late 90s/early 2000s before disbanding. A reunion was attempted years later but didn’t pan out, and sadly Holt died in 2017.

Listening to some of their stuff again recently and it still holds up well. A good trip down memory lane for my early music discovery.

It’s movie talk Thursday. This week we have:

MOVIE: Lockout
RELEASED: 2012
GENRE: action/sci-fi
PLOT: When Emilie (Maggie Grace), the President’s daughter, and her crew are held hostage in an outer space prison, the government approaches Snow (Guy Pearce), a falsely convicted agent, offering him his freedom if he rescues her.

Clearly inspired by the likes of escape from New York, the film is a tonne of fun. In a not so usual role (that I’ve seen) for him, Guy Pearce does a great job playing the wise cracking smart ass. A bit of that Bruce Willis die hard vibe.

SONGS TO CHECK OUT: with only a short EP out the whole thing is worth a listen (or 12)

I caught these guys at over the weekend and they were a highlight of the day for me Crushing black/death with thick atmosphere. Keen as to hear more from these lads
