While in Vietnam as part of a two-year project supported by the ASEAN-Australia Centre to connect the Southeast Asian and Australian creative industries, Turning World and Freeflow Projects were introduced to the newly formed Vietnam Cultural Industries Development Association (VCIDA).

VCIDA kindly invited local artists to meet us and share their practice and thoughts on international exchange and collaboration.

It feels like an exciting time for the sector in Vietnam with enthusiasm to collaborate nationally and internationally. We’ll be sharing more from our travels soon!

It was wonderful seeing audiences experience Sutarath Sinnong’s work at ArtPlay over the weekend, and bringing their own shadow puppets to life on set afterwards!

A huge thanks to the exceptional ArtPlay team for welcoming the production and hosting an industry morning tea, where Sutarath (Homemade Puppet group) shared her practice and we learned more about Thai Theatre Foundation, who produced this tour.

While in Melbourne, Sutarath also connected with Polyglot Theatre and caught their shows ‘Paper Planet’ and ‘Sound of Drawing’. A year on from Kate and Tam visiting Thailand for an project connecting Southeast Asian and Australian creative industries, it’s amazing to see these cross-cultural artistic connections thriving.

The Melbourne season of Sutarath Sinnong’s work sold out quickly, but ‘The Drift in Between’ arrives in Sydney this week! Catch the production at Mosman Art Gallery this Saturday 18 July.

A few weeks ago, we were invited by KL Festival to facilitate an Australian delegation of artists and producers to visit the Festival, currently under the direction of the excellent June Tan.

Thanks to support from Australian High Commission in Malaysia and our generous sector colleagues, nine Australians attended both weekends of KL Festival, exploring opportunities for future collaboration and exchange. While there, Turning World also co-curated a new international producers platform, ‘Currents & Confluence’, to share knowledge with colleagues from Malaysia, UK, Japan and Indonesia.

It’s exciting to see KL Festival become a new (hopefully annual) festival in Southeast Asia. It was enthusiastically embraced by audiences, and has potential to grow into an important platform for nurturing Malaysian talent and showcasing international work.

And true to June's word, the food was NEXT LEVEL!

We look forward to keeping in touch with June and the whole team to see connections build.

(her two favourite things) and sharing insights from her Churchill Fellowship report ‘Cultural Power is Political Power’.

Summit tickets on waitlist only now but look out for commentary via social media.

On Monday night in Perth, the Asia T**A team were overjoyed to receive the Inspire Award for Organisations at the 2026 Asia Pacific Arts Awards, in recognition of the festival’s contribution to artistic collaboration and cultural exchange across the Asia-Pacific.

“We are humbled by this acknowledgment from the Awards Jury of esteemed peers and experts, and we want to thank our community for embracing our vision and diving into our programs with such curiosity and passion,” said Creative Director Jeff Khan while accepting the award alongside 2025 Executive Producer Naomi Velaphi, Senior Curator Tam Nguyen and Executive Director, Performing Arts, Melanie Smith.

“This month marks a major milestone for Asia T**A – one year since our reimagined 2025 festival opened. It’s hard to believe a year has passed since Asia T**A captivated the imaginations of audiences, artists and creative communities across Melbourne and the world. The recognition of this award comes at a critical time for Asia T**A as we work to secure support for our next festival cycle and dream up even greater contributions to the cultural life of the region.”

Performances commissioned and presented at Asia T**A’s 2025 festival have since gone on to reach more than 20,000 audience members in 12 countries across the Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe. And we’re just getting started: the Asia T**A team are now diving into creative developments for a whole range of new performances, ideas and commissions for the 2026-2028 festival cycle.

Red is an artist, curator, and producer working across dance, theater, experimental music. She is co-director of MORUA, a Nha Trang-based independent dance platform, and Project Đẩy Sàn, a Saigon-based platform for performance makers in Vietnam.

Red curated Dealing in Distance traveling festival (Goethe Institut Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Manila, 2025-2026), co-curated Djakarta International Theater Platform (2025), and Nổ Cái Bùm Traveling Art Festival (Hoi An & Da Nang, 2024). She collaborates with Southeast Asian artists and producers through MORASUM, co-founded by producers from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and South Korea, and SEACN (Southeast Asia Choreographer Networks).
