It’s self-protection.
When funding tightens and pressure rises, organisations don’t usually abandon their mission. They narrow it.
Listening gets harder. Decisions get safer. Community voice becomes “data," And change starts to feel like a threat instead of a signal.
This isn’t about bad intent. Teams matter. Jobs matter. Stability matters.
But when survival becomes the unspoken priority, the work shifts.Not loudly.Quietly.

That’s why we start with assessment, not solutions.

* What problem are we actually solving?
* Who carries the risk of getting it wrong?
* Where has listening been replaced by assumption?
* What would progress look like if we designed for less dependency, not more activity?
Real community work should change the system, not entrench our role inside it.
If the work is effective, the organisation becomes less central over time, not more powerful.
The hard question isn’t: “Is this program sustainable?”
It’s: “Would this community still move forward without us?”
That’s the difference between building capacity and building dependency.
