This week our feature is kitchens, there are a number of design features you need to consider when planning your kitchen:
Â
1. Layout & Workflow
* Work Triangle: Optimize the distance between the sink, stove, and refrigerator for efficient movement.
* Zoning: Create zones for prep, cooking, cleaning, and storage.
* Open vs. Closed Layout: Decide if you want an open-plan kitchen or a more enclosed space.
2. Storage Solutions
* Cabinetry: Use a mix of drawers, cupboards, and pull-outs.
* Pantry: Include a walk-in or pull-out pantry for bulk storage.
* Vertical Space: Utilize upper cabinets or open shelving for extra storage.
3. Lighting
* Task Lighting: Bright lights over work areas like countertops and the stove.
* Ambient Lighting: General lighting for the whole room (e.g., ceiling fixtures).
* Accent Lighting: Under-cabinet or toe-kick lighting for mood and style.
4. Materials & Finishes
* Countertops: Choose durable, easy-to-clean surfaces like quartz, granite, or laminate.
* Cabinet Finishes: Consider wood, painted, or high-gloss finishes.
* Backsplash: Adds personality and protects walls—tiles, glass, or stone are popular.
5. Appliances
* Built-in vs. Freestanding: Built-in appliances offer a seamless look.
* Smart Appliances: Consider energy-efficient and smart-enabled options.
* Ventilation: A good range hood is essential for air quality.
6. Plumbing & Electrical
* Sink Placement: Often under a window or on an island.
* Power Outlets: Plan for enough outlets in convenient locations.
* Water Filtration: Consider built-in filters or instant hot water taps.
7. Style & Aesthetics
* Color Scheme: Neutral tones for timeless appeal or bold colors for personality.
* Hardware: Handles and k***s can define the kitchen’s style.
* Flooring: Durable and easy to clean—tile, hardwood, or vinyl are common.
8. Ergonomics & Accessibility
* Counter Height: Standard is 36”, but can be adjusted for comfort.
* Drawer vs. Shelf: Drawers are easier to access than deep shelves.
* Universal Design: Consider accessibility for all ages and abilities.
