From one tired mummy to another 🤎

27/08/2026

A few people have said to me over the last few days, “Wow, how are you doing that with a baby?” or “I can barely get out of the house this morning.”

And honestly, I completely get it.

The snow might look like we’ve got this whole new baby thing figured out, but the reality is that most days are far less adventurous.

I struggle with prep drop off. The grocery shop can feel like a mission. Some days even getting everyone dressed and out the door feels like enough.
We’re a little team, and getting somewhere like the snow with a baby takes a lot of preparation, flexibility and sometimes a little bit of crying in the car..

I’m so grateful for the kindness and encouragement we’ve received, but I also wanted to share the other side.

Because it’s so easy to look at someone else’s little snapshot and compare it to your whole day.

Yes, we’ve taken our baby to the snow.

But we’ve also been exactly where you are, and honestly, that’s probably where we are most days.

The big adventures and the really ordinary, hard days can exist at the same time.

If getting out of the house today feels like enough, it is. 🤍

Having a new baby is a big enough adjustment without having to worry about whether your gear is actually going to stand up to real life.

I’ll be the first to admit that getting out and about with a newborn can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. But having gear you genuinely love and can rely on makes those little or big adventures feel so much more doable, and so much more enjoyable.

We’ve been using the UPPAbaby CRUZ V3 and it has been such a beautiful part of becoming a mum again.

I’ve always believed a pram is one of those things worth investing in. It’s basically your baby’s car. You want it to be comfortable, reliable, durable and able to go wherever you need it to.

The sturdy wheels and durable materials make it feel genuinely built for real life, while the Cozy Ganoosh (cute 🥹) has been perfect for keeping her snug on those really cold days, even these snowy ones!

And the Owen colour 🤎 I’m obsessed.

Having good, reliable gear doesn’t make having a new baby easy, but it certainly makes getting out the door, and enjoying the everyday moments, a little easier.

Some babies will have what’s known as “hibernation sleep” after their first feed. Cue cute 🥹

It’s a deep, extended, restorative sleep that is thought to help babies transition from life in the womb, conserve their energy and recover from the huge physical work of being born.

It can sometimes catch parents off guard, especially when you’re expecting those early newborn feeds to be frequent and waking them feels like the obvious thing to do.

But sometimes, after that first feed, they simply need to sleep.

What matters most is that your baby has had a good first feed, is otherwise well, and when they’re ready, they wake and feed well again.

Their first little reset after birth. 🤍

This was our baby’s first hibernation sleep, with a very proud big brother keeping watch.

One of those tiny moments I wish I could bottle up forever…

Did your baby hibernate? 🐻

HOT TIP 🌶️ Shower with your baby.
Here’s why.

Beyond simply getting clean, it can become a beautiful opportunity to:

〰️Encourage partner involvement and build confidence caring for baby.

〰️Enjoy skin-to-skin contact, which supports bonding and helps regulate baby’s temperature, heart rate and breathing.

〰️Calm and settle a fussy newborn with the warmth of the water and the comfort of being held.

〰️Make life a little easier! There’s less preparation than setting up a bath, especially in those early weeks.

A few safety reminders:

✨Have another adult hand baby to you and take baby from you when you’re finished.

🔥 Handy hint. Have a towel to receive them in and another dry towel ready at your change station. Remove the wet towel straight away.

✨Use a non-slip mat and be mindful that babies can be quite slippery in water.

✨Keep the water warm, not hot.

Do you shower with your baby, or is this something you’d like to try?

If your baby is being born by caesarean, save this for their birthday ✨

How we personalised our caesarean birth:

My husband by my side, included, present and supportive.

Playing music that made the space feel like ours.

Asking to lower the drape so we could watch our baby being born.

Taking photos and videos of those first moments (with permission).

Delayed cord clamping.

My husband trimming her umbilical cord.

Immediate skin-to-skin, continuing through recovery until after our first breastfeed.

These options may not always be achievable depending on your circumstances, your baby’s needs or your hospital’s policies. But it’s important to ask questions, share your preferences and understand what is possible.

Because a caesarean isn’t just a procedure.

It’s the day you meet your baby.

It’s your baby’s birthday 🎂

Feel free to share your caesarean moments below👇🏼

People often assume that because I’m a midwife, postpartum would come naturally to me.

The truth is, knowledge and lived experience are two very different things.

I know the physiology of breastfeeding. I know what’s considered normal newborn behaviour.

But knowing something professionally doesn’t mean you don’t feel it personally.

I’ve still questioned my milk supply.
I’ve still second-guessed myself.
I’ve still needed reassurance.
I’ve still had moments where I wondered if I was doing enough.

Becoming a mum again has reminded me that no amount of training can replace lived experience.

If anything, it continues to make me a more empathetic midwife. I not only understand postpartum from textbooks or hospital rooms I enter, I understand it from the feeding chair, at 2 am, with sore ni***es, my girl on my chest, and a mind full of questions.

If you’re in the thick of it, this is your reminder that needing support isn’t a reflection of what you know. It’s part of being human.

From putting it together to our first walk, the UPPAbaby CRUZ V3 has just made sense. In the newborn haze, having something that’s simple to set up and easy to use is something I’ve really appreciated.

The bassinet has become so much more than just a pram attachment. It’s been her little daytime nap space at home, and when it’s time for some fresh air, we can head straight out for a walk without needing to move her. Cue the morning coffees. Those little things make such a difference in the newborn season.

And can we take a moment for the Owen Mocha Melange? 🤎

These are the little moments I’ll always remember.

So grateful to for gifting us something that’s become such a beautiful part of these early newborn days 🫧

The goal isn’t getting them to love their baby, it’s helping them feel loved too.

When introducing his new sibling, we tried to focus on his experience of becoming a big brother.

What worked for us:

• Open arms. The first cuddle wasn’t with the baby, it was with him.

• Involve them from the beginning. If you don’t know the gender, let them discover it too.

• Let them choose how they want to meet baby. A cuddle, a hold or a look into the bassinet.

• Make space for connection. Skin to skin isn’t just for mum & dad.

• Set them up for success. Support them, guide them and help them feel confident holding the baby.

• Let them be curious. Let them talk. Let them sing. Let them discover.

• Give them a role. Choosing an outfit, helping with a nappy and feeling included.

• Create space for normal. We loved having LEGO, snacks, stories and familiar routines.

• Integrate washing hands from the first meet. It’s okay to advocate & protect.

All of this made for a beautiful experience as we welcomed our daughter and he became a big brother 🤎
