🐜 WHAT STARTED WITH A TERMITE NEST IN A TREE LED TO THIS…

We were recently called to a property in Cardiff South after the homeowner noticed a termite nest in a tree on the property.

As a precaution, they made the smart decision to have the house professionally inspected for termites.

During our inspection, we discovered active termites in the subfloor along with extensive termite damage to the bearers and floor joists.

Interestingly, the termite genus attacking the house was different to the termites found in the nest outside — a good reminder that seeing one obvious source of termite activity doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.

Termites can be active in concealed areas of a property with very few obvious signs from inside the home.

If you notice a termite nest, mud leads, damaged timber or anything else suspicious around your property, don’t disturb it — arrange a professional termite inspection.

🕷️ LOOK WHO CAME OUT TO SAY HELLO!

This spider made an appearance during one of our general pest treatments this week.

Spiders often hide away in cracks, crevices and other sheltered areas around the outside of a home, which is why a thorough pest treatment involves more than simply spraying the areas you can see.

Our general pest treatments target common pests around the home and help reduce the unwanted visitors hiding around your property.

If you're starting to notice more spiders, cockroaches, ants or other pests around the house, it might be time for a treatment.

🕷️ NOT THE SURPRISE WE WERE EXPECTING TODAY…

While carrying out a termite chemical treatment to active termites in a tree today, we uncovered this funnel-web spider hiding nearby.

A good reminder for our technicians that when we’re working around trees, soil, subfloors and other concealed areas, termites aren’t always the only thing we need to be looking out for!

It’s also a timely reminder of why we take PPE and safe work practices seriously — you never quite know what you’re going to uncover.

Unfortunately, our eight-legged friend wasn’t particularly interested in posing for a photo… but we did our best. 📸🕷️

Another interesting day at Elite Building & Pest Services!

💧 MORE THAN JUST PEST CONTROL

During a recent commercial pest control service at a local hotel, our technician discovered a leaking tap that had already begun flooding the kitchen floor.

The hotel wasn't due to reopen until the following afternoon, meaning the leak could have continued unnoticed for many more hours.

We immediately notified the owner so the water could be isolated and the issue addressed — potentially preventing significantly more water damage.

It’s a good reminder of one of the added benefits of having regular contractors inspecting and servicing your commercial premises, particularly when the property is closed or unattended.

While we're there to manage pests, our technicians are always keeping an eye out for anything unusual that could affect the property.

🔎 IT’S NOT JUST TERMITES WE’RE LOOKING FOR

During a recent termite inspection, we identified moisture-related deterioration affecting the bearers, floor joists and flooring substrate within the subfloor.

In this case, high external ground levels appeared to be contributing to moisture entering the subfloor area. Lowering the external ground level and improving drainage around the building can help reduce moisture exposure and assist in rectifying the underlying issue.

Excessive moisture beneath a home can lead to deterioration of structural timbers, fungal decay and mould — and importantly, damp conditions can also make a property more conducive to termite activity.

This is why a thorough termite inspection involves much more than simply looking for active termites. We also identify conditions that may increase the risk of termite attack and issues that may require further investigation or repair.

🏠 When was your property last inspected?

Regular termite inspections can help identify termite activity, timber damage and termite-conducive conditions before they develop into much larger problems.

🐜 A TERMITE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DOESN’T MEAN TERMITES CAN’T GET IN!

These photos were taken during an inspection at a school in Lake Macquarie, where we discovered termite leads travelling up a steel pole, across the installed termite management system and into the building.

This is a great example of why having a termite management system installed does not mean a property is termite-proof.

Termite management systems are designed to help protect a building and/or make termite entry more detectable — but termites can still find ways to bridge these systems and gain concealed access.

🔎 This is why regular termite inspections are so important.

Termite management systems should be inspected at least every 12 months, and more frequent inspections may be recommended depending on the property and termite risk.

Don't assume your property is protected just because a termite system is installed.

🐜 ACTIVE TERMITES – BAITING TREATMENT UNDERWAY

Our technician recently attended this property where active termites were located and an above-ground termite baiting program was installed directly to the areas of activity.

Termite baiting works by allowing the termites to continue feeding on the bait and carry it back through the colony. The bait stations are then regularly monitored and replenished as required until termite activity has been eliminated.

Finding termites doesn’t always mean reaching straight for a chemical spray. Correct identification, treatment and ongoing monitoring are an important part of achieving effective termite management.

If you’ve noticed suspicious timber damage, mud leads or termite activity around your property, get in touch with Elite Building & Pest Services.
