We loved being part og this lively discussion last week for FIA on the expert panel with Julie Callaghan and Luke Edwards. Here's a recap of Kara's top tips:

😱 70% of campaigns fail to generate ROI, 85% miss their targets
👻 Being boring is costing you more
🌈 Being creative and human is your secret weapon
🧠 Use data and research to understand your audience and the problem first
🤝 When marketing and fundraising work together beautiful things happen

Huge thanks to expert moderator Tanya Carlyle and Josh Lawlor, Debra Moore and Jody McLucas for inviting me to be part of your awesome community. The amazing people in the room are making the world better on the daily. Surely we've got the future of fundraising all sorted!?

Don’t know much about First Nations culture? Try adding these to your book list! 📚

Over the last few years we’ve done a bunch of training and worked on lots of First Nations projects including focus groups, yarning circles and one-on-one interviews and we've learnt a lot. It’s not lost on us the trust and responsibility of doing this work well.

There’s always an element of discomfort. Being the fish out of water, facing up to hard truths, listening and trying to understand. But that’s the point.
And we’ve still got HEAPS to learn.

Our hope for this reconciliation week is for First Nations culture to become less foreign, misunderstood or feared and more awe-inspiring to all Australians. And it can start with you... today!

Tell us your recommendations for books that have grown your knowledge and changed your perspective.

Disrupt or double down on what delivers? 🤷‍♀️

It’s a question all marketers and fundraisers are asking on the daily.🫠

Kara has some thoughts! 🧠

She joins a brains trust including Julie Callaghan (former COO of Breast Cancer Trials) and Luke Edwards (Founder & Director of Elevate Fundraising) at the event on 21 May.

Failure. And how not to follow the yellow brick road to Mordor. 🧺🐶👠

Our Fail Harder crew joined forces today at Hunter Medical Research Institute to unpack ‘When Marcomms Goes Wrong’ with Will Collie and Mike Collins.

One moment you’re happily skipping down the yellow brick road of a marketing campaign, the next you’re failing loudly – or worse quietly.

We broke down the top 3 reasons things go off the rails 🔥

1. Relationship breakdowns (internal or with partner agencies)
2. Lack of trust with key stakeholders, or within your team
3. Silence...when people don’t speak up even when something feels off

Will Collie shared some cringe fail examples, from the Maccas CEO trying a burger ‘product’ for lunch, Peloton’s infamous worst Christmas gift ever campaign, and Pepsi’s Kendall Jenner moment. Painful to watch, but hard to look away.

So how to avoid the path to failure?
Build strong relationships, create a culture with permission to challenge, and embrace the healthy tension that comes from diverse perspectives.

Shout out to the team for hosting a kick ass event, Mike for bravely sharing a real life fail, Will for his insights, and the whole Fail Harder community for showing up to learn, discuss and fail harder.

Are you a CMO with FOMO? Ask us about our next event in August 🙋🏻‍♀️

It’s a brawl at City Hall! The Guts team kept things punchy last month by living our values ‘embrace the strange’ 👻.

Every quarter we do something out of our comfort zone to encourage boldness, bravery and creativity. This time we stood shoulder‑to‑shoulder with die-hard pro‑wrestling fans to joyously boo, chant and yell “no mullet no power”.

If this brand strategy thing doesn’t work out Kara and Court are seriously considering stepping into the ring. Carny Boy, Rita, you’ve been warned 🏆

New work! 🏕️ The enviro sector is going off and recruitment of good people feels impossible. With this project we proved they’re out there, you just need the right brand positioning. [proof: the website crashed from too much traffic] 🙈

The Newcastle Art Gallery official re-opening was a huge triumph, congratulations team! 🏆

As the jewel in Newcastle’s cultural landscape, we are super proud to have played a small part in one of the largest projects in the history of the City of Newcastle . The result is iconic, unique and most importantly, welcoming. Pink donut and all. 🩷

23,000 people came through the doors over the launch weekend to check out the $48mil expansion. Exploring the new space, which has more than doubled in size was a special moment. A live tattoo performance by Eddy Lou felt very Newcastle. 💪

We remember walking through the gallery for our first meeting 4 years ago and all the precious cargo was being wrapped in bubble wrap. The journey the team have been on since that day has had no shortage of challenges.

In our research and strategy work one of the key insights from leaders in the art world around Australia was “collection envy”. The 7,000-strong collection includes a Picasso, a Brett Whiteley, a Sidney Nolan, a Patricia Piccinini and awe-inspiring First Nations artworks.

It’s a great example of not just having a bold vision but the grit, determination and stamina to keep going - the queues around the block are proving all the doubters wrong!

Pressure is a privilege 🫡

Standing on the Olympic track in Sydney, carrying the weight of a nation and the hopes of First Nations people, Cathy Freeman didn’t run from pressure - she ran with it.

So lucky to be in the same room as Cathy Freeman who made the 2026 International Women’s Day Luncheon at Newcastle City Hall one we won’t forget. We cheered, cried and marvelled at the empowering nature of a handmade budget from 1992 (thanks so much for sharing your story Kim Sills )

Cathy spoke about how the real high performers come alive under pressure. We’re inspired by the awesome women in our community who step up to meet high expectations daily. Hard to think of a better example of this than Sandra and Kylie’s story from .

It all made us feel even more gutsy.

Shout out to for an incredible event.
