The framework has 4 maturity levels and for most Australian businesses, the realistic starting point is Maturity Level 1 (ML1). It is the entry rung designed to defend against opportunistic, off-the-shelf attacks that make up the bulk of what criminals actually use.

With Essential Eight being retired and replaced over the next couple of years, it is a question that has come up a bit lately: is there something else we should be looking at instead?

One name that has popped up is SMB1001, a tiered cyber security standard built specifically for SMBs. Our take: it is less about picking one over the other and more about what problem you are trying to solve.

The big thing SMB1001 has going for it is a real certificate at the end that you can submit to an insurer, a client or a tender panel. Essential Eight was never really built to give you that.

Over the next two years, The Essential Eight will be phased out and replaced with a new set of guidance called the Essentials series.

Before anyone panics, nothing changes today and the work you have already put in isn't wasted. This is more of a sensible update than a scrap-and-start-again situation. The Essential Eight was built for an on-prem IT world and not many businesses run that way anymore.

As a 100% Aboriginal owned and led not-for-profit supporting vulnerable young people across Perth, they needed a provider who understood and respected their mission and not just their infrastructure.

Ever tried working remotely when your files are stuck on an on-premises server?

For the team at Woodford Golf Club, that meant logging into a VPN every time they needed to access a document. On top of that, there were no real file permissions in place and anyone could access anything, with no record of who had been where.

It wasn't sustainable, especially in the current cyber security environment.

So we went out to the club, spent time understanding how the team actually works and designed a SharePoint solution around that.

The outcome? Staff can now access files from anywhere without a VPN, permissions are properly set up and there is full visibility over who is accessing what. The whole migration happened without a single hour of downtime.
