Introducing the Multicultural Centre for Respectful Maternity Care (MCRMC) – a consumer-led, not-for-profit organisation created by and for migrant families in Australia!

We are the Multicultural Centre for Respectful Maternity Care (MCRMC) – founded and governed by a diverse group of migrant mothers and fathers who have walked the journey through Australia’s maternity system. Our mission? To make sure every migrant and culturally diverse woman receives equitable, culturally safe, sensitive, and truly respectful maternity care – care that honours your cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic background, and leaves you feeling seen, heard, and dignified.

We aim to work in three powerful ways:

1️⃣ Empowering maternity care providers – Through free, evidence-based education, tools, and resources, we help clinicians, midwives, doctors, and health services recognise biases, use interpreters well, respect traditional birthing practices (where safe), and deliver trauma-informed, culturally responsive care. Together, we’re reducing birth trauma, higher caesarean rates, postpartum challenges, and mistreatment that too many migrant families face.

2️⃣ Supporting migrant women and families – We provide accessible multilingual guides, peer support networks, education sessions, and advocacy to help you navigate antenatal care, birth choices, postnatal support, and your rights under Australia’s maternity frameworks. Our aim: to build your confidence, resilience, and power in making informed decisions.

3️⃣ Conducting and collaborating on research – We lead, partner in, and participate in high-quality health research focused on maternity experiences of migrant and culturally diverse women. Using consumer-informed studies, qualitative insights, and evaluation of culturally safe interventions, we generate evidence that drives real change – informing better policies, practices, and outcomes to close equity gaps in maternal health.

As a grassroots organisation, we collaborate closely with multicultural communities, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers to create systemic change. Our vision is simple yet powerful: a maternity system in Australia (and beyond) where no woman feels erased, discriminated against, or disrespected – where every birth celebrates the richness of diverse heritages and builds healthier futures for families across generations.

If this resonates with you – whether you're a migrant mum/dad, a maternity professional, a researcher, or someone passionate about health equity – we’d love to connect!

Studying for a career in allied health?

The 2026 Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship might be for you!

Matilda saw her Cadetship as more than just a career step – it was the chance to make a real difference in Aboriginal communities.

“It allowed me to gain hands-on experience while studying as a dietitian. I got to see what the job actually looks like in both clinical and community settings,” she says. “I learned how to provide culturally informed care and how to better engage Aboriginal people in a meaningful way. That’s something you don’t always learn in the classroom.”

For Matilda, one of the most powerful moments during her Cadetship came while working in the Cessnock community. “I helped deliver a cooking program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Teaching young kids how to cook and eat well, starting from the next generation, was such a meaningful experience. I felt like I was really giving back. It helps you put theory into practice and motivates you by showing the real impact you can have. Plus, you’re supported every step of the way.”

Applications for the 2026 Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship program are now open for eligible Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in their final two years of study.
