R U OK?Day is a reminder to start a conversation ANY day of the year.
But what if someone tells you they're not OK?

1. Stop and listen with compassion and without judgement
- Give your full attention and let them speak freely
- Listen to the words you are hearing ("I'm feeling ___" or “I'm thinking")
- Observe the other person's body language, is it withdrawn?
- To show you have listened, use words like “I'm hearing you're feeling” or “I'm seeing you're upset about that”

2. Avoid minimising their experience
- Don't say things like “You'll be right, it's not that bad”

3. Offer ongoing support
- Check in later with a simple message like, “How have you been going since we last spoke?”
- Make plans to stay connected, a walk, a coffee, or a quick call can go a long way.

4. Encourage seeking professional help
- You don't have to be a professional to see how they're doing, but if something is wrong (especially if it lasts more than 2 weeks) it may be a good idea to refer them to the available services that can be found at the bottom of this article, even their own GP can help.

5. Follow up
- Check in with them after some time has passed and see if they are still in the same headspace. Let them know you are always there to have a chat and continue offering that space.
