Your AI isn't yours. You rent it. And last week, the landlord changed the locks on everyone.

On 9 June, Anthropic launched the two most powerful AI models on the planet. On 12 June, a US export-control order had them switched off for every customer on earth, three days after launch. A week later they are still dark.

Read that timeline again, because it just rewrote the rules for every business quietly running on AI. You do not own the models you depend on. You rent access, and that access can be revoked by people you will never meet, for reasons you will never be told. The order gave none.

We were sold AI as something we own. The truth is closer to a tenancy: monthly rent, someone else's name on the lease, and a landlord who can change the locks in three days, on everyone at once, with no warning and no appeal.

Anthropic's own assessment is that applying this standard across the industry would "essentially halt all new model deployments." The company that built the thing is telling you the ground is not stable. The first time a government does this, it is precedent, and precedent gets reused.

Treat it as a planning problem. Map where your business leans on a single tool, and build the fallback before you need it. Because here is the only question that matters the morning it goes dark: name the one tool your business could not run a Monday without.

AI just got its first velvet rope.

Anthropic released two models last week. Fable 5, which anyone can buy at double the old flagship price. And Mythos 5, which you cannot buy at all. Access is by approval: vetted cybersecurity and biomedical partners. Hundreds of organisations, fifteen countries, and you are not one of them.

For two years, every release made the best AI cheaper. That run just ended, and it ended in a specific direction. The newest capability now launches at a premium, and the unrestricted version is reserved for organisations that were already big enough to be on the list.

AI was sold as the great leveller. Replace expensive people with cheap software and the playing field tilts toward whoever moves fastest, not whoever has the deepest pockets. What we got instead is a market splitting in two.

Commodity models for everyone. Frontier capability priced like a wage. And above that, a tier where no amount of money gets you in, because the entry requirement is being the right kind of organisation.

So the companies that could already afford the best people now get the best machines as well. Everyone else gets last year's model and a price rise.

Maybe that is just how every technology settles. Electricity, computing and the internet all started exclusive and ended up everywhere. Or maybe this one is different, because the thing being rationed this time is capability itself.
