We're really excited at Janali & Co. to be collaborating with the South Metropolitan Health Service on the development of a new Multicultural Action Plan. SMHS is responsible for the delivery of critical health services in the South metro region - Fiona Stanley, Fremantle, Rockingham and Peel hospital services as well as a range of community health services.

Colleagues and community champions, we'd really love your support in sharing this multilingual survey with your community networks. We are especially keen to hear from people who have had experience with SMHS services as patients or family members. Your feedback will help ensure these important health services respond to the needs of our diverse community.

We want our health service to be recognised as welcoming, inclusive and culturally safe. Your experience is important to help us shape our next Multicultural Action Plan.

Last month at our company launch event we were delighted to host our friend, mentor and collaborator Tim Muirhead for a fireside chat with Sarah Janali CF reflecting on his 42 years of community development practice.

As Tim transitions into retirement, it was wonderful to celebrate his significant contributions to the community development sector. The conversation was so interesting and inspiring that we thought we'd share it for those of you who weren't able to be there. We've included a snippet of Tim’s reflections below and you can read the conversation in its entirety here:

"For me, a big part of this community development work, at least in my culture, has been about rehumanising: rehumanising practice, rehumanising policies, rehumanising culture. So I’m thinking what my part could be…. I want to be an advocate for the soul. I want to be an advocate for our humanity and to keep saying ‘being human matters. Paying attention to each other really really matters’, much more than the programs and efficiencies and so on and so forth. So I think I’ll be sending little ideas from the side about human spirit and being human.”

Explore Tim Muirhead's reflections on 42 years of community development practice in this inspiring fireside chat. From navigating complexity to fostering connection and embracing difference, Tim shares valuable lessons, challenges, and hopes for the future.

We are excited this week to be going live with a brand new course!

'On the Frontline of Welcome' is for government and non-government workers who find themselves in roles where they come into contact with people who have recently arrived in Australia.

With 1 in 4 Australians born overseas, and over 300 languages spoken at home, cultural and linguistic diversity is mainstream in Australia. Each year Australia welcomes hundreds of thousands of overseas born migrants who arrive to start a new life here. Many government and non-government services, whether they realise it or not, are on the frontline of welcoming newcomers. Local government workers, educators, health professionals, youth workers, community and customer service officers and other frontline staff - they can all play an important role in helping newcomers navigate communities and build connections in their new home.

If you are on the frontline of welcome then this course is for you. Over a full day of interactive learning, you can expect to learn more about the diverse communities you serve and add to your toolkit a range of strategies that will help you nurture relationships across cultures, increase service access and enhance newcomer inclusion.

Lately I've been contemplating the significance of place—how we connect with it, its role in community development practice, and the factors influencing our ability to achieve social outcomes in a specific locale. This marks the first in a series of musings about place that I look forward to sharing with you over the summer.

In this first article I've tried to unpack the concept of place and shared some personal reflections on my own connection to place. This photo is me in the place that I feel most connected to - my local park. You'll find me there every morning, usually with a coffee in hand!

Excerpt: “On a personal level when I think about my own connection to place, I think about my neighbourhood. The Jacarandas in spring, crisp summer mornings and hot afternoons, the football siren on a winter weekend and the smell of incense wafting across to my veranda from our next-door neighbour as he does his morning prayers. Along with the sensory interaction I have with place I also think about the relational aspects. The daily interactions I have with the people around me - conversations at school drop-off, the reliable smile from the owners of our post office when I go to pick up the mail, looking after my neighbours pets.

Places hold our memories and stories. They remind us of who we are and where we’ve come from. Walking around my neighbourhood I’m reminded of different stages of my life – exploring these streets as a child, the joys of student shared house living, falling in love, raising a family, and building a community. There’s a church that you can see from many parts of my neighbourhood. When I was young my nana would take me on walks, she would point at the church steeple and we would play a game with our hands ….. “Here is the church, here is the steeple, open up the doors and here are all the people!”. When I see that steeple now, it reminds me of my connection with family and what it was like to be a child exploring these streets with curiosity and delight in things big and small. “

If this article inspires you to think about what place means to you I'd love to hear your thoughts in the chat.

Stay tuned for more musings on place in the upcoming articles, which will explore strategies for building place knowledge and nurturing relationships in place.

This week I've been reflecting on my own reasons for supporting the . Learning that, according to polls, people in my age group are increasingly likely to vote no prompted me to think about how I came to the conclusion that voting is the right thing to do.

This article is a reflection on growing up in Perth's northern suburbs in the 1980s & 90s - learning very little about First Nations history and culture through the school system and coming to develop a deeper appreciation of this later in life.

We all have in this. Over the coming weeks it is important that we spend time listening to First Nations stories, that we reflect on our own story and most importantly that we think critically about what this all means for our collective Australian story.

Big thanks to my Aboriginal colleagues who generously gave up their time to peer review this reflection.

I’m voting Yes because I believe that supporting First Nations people to have a say in matters that affect them is the right thing to do. Much of the conversations around the Yes campaign have focussed on what it will mean for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Rightly so as this invit...
