Sinosteel Midwest Corporation (SMC) in our partnership with the Botanical Gardens and Parks Authority are pleased to announce that we have won the 2017 AMEC Environment Award for our work on the leading practice in Banded Iron Formation restoration project. The award is recognition of a 7 year research partnership forged between Kings Park Science (Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority) and Sinosteel Midwest Corporation to tackle the complex environmental and biodiversity issues associated with post-mining restoration of a Threatened Ecological Community in a banded iron formation (BIF) landform.
The partnership is one of Kings Park’s most comprehensive restoration partnerships, providing research that underpins the practical restoration necessary to restore plant species of BIF following mining. The project results will be used by SMC to actually restore BIF vegetation communities at Koolanooka and Blue Hills sites and not just revegetate a mine site.

The research excelled in taking restoration science of a TEC to levels beyond those demanded by regulatory obligations, without precedence and integrating key research areas that resulted in the first industry manual for BIF mine site restoration. The manual written to guide SMC’s rehabilitation standards and to inform the broader mining community of the approach underpinning this leading standard and to broaden the knowledge base of research and management outcomes.

As a result of the research partnership, SMC has demonstrated the capacity to re-introduce high levels of plant diversity highlighting that successful restoration of a biodiverse ecosystem is possible within a biodiversity hotspot.

The Nagle College in Geraldton with support from SMC’s Wajarri Education, Employment and Training fund held a camp in the Francois Peron National Park at Shark Bay during August 2016. Students and staff participated in a range of activities to explore and deepen their understandings of Aboriginal culture.
The camp was aimed at building upon the Certificate I in Leadership Development undertaken in Year 10, addressing key areas of Leadership, Team building, Communication, Cultural Awareness, Environmental Awareness, Safety and Respect.
The camp was a huge success and enhanced the students understanding of their aboriginal culture…and it was a lot of fun.
SMC and Nagle hope to run similar camps in the future.
