We often see comments along the lines of "Why should I create a firebreak - how is a 3m firebreak going to stop a fire?" Yesterday's incident in O'Brien road is a perfect example.

A few sparks from this power pole (or a branch falling across it) lit a fire under the pole and along the fence line. There were strong winds going right to left in this photo, and not a single part of the dry paddock on the left caught fire.

Without that well maintained firebreak, the fire would have been through the paddock, and in the trees you can see on the left well before we could have responded, and what was a fire that took 15 minutes to sort out, could have been a major incident. At the time another major incident in Mundaring was also getting started - so resources would have been stretched at both incidents, making both fires worse.

So while a firebreak may not stop a major fire in full flight - they can very well stop a smaller fire that is just getting started. They also provide somewhere for us to drive our vehicles - possibly to protect your property.

Create and/or maintain your firebreaks all summer, folks.
