What actually separates a smooth Odoo go-live from a chaotic one? We have been part of enough implementations to notice it is rarely the platform.

It tends to come down to how the switch is managed. A few things we keep seeing show up in the smooth ones:

👉 How clean the data is before migration even starts.
👉 How training actually happens (hint: not in one session before go-live).
👉 How much visibility the team has into progress along the way.

Our team mate Giovanni wrote up the best practices we have learned along the way and what tends to go wrong when they are skipped.

Check them out.👇

A rocky Odoo go-live is rarely down to just the software. See what actually causes it and how to avoid it in your own implementation, from day one.

Beyond the good company and great food, our Melbourne Timber Meet Up last week surfaced some honest conversation about where the industry's really at right now: construction pressure, shipping costs, the skills shortage and the one thing everyone agreed actually wins the work.

We have rounded it all up in a full article. Have a read 👇

Want in on the next meet up? Drop us a note and we will let you know when it's happening.

Timber industry leaders share what is driving margin pressure, skills shortages and system decisions in now. Insights from our July 2026 Timber Meet Up.

Less time chasing numbers, more time running the business - that is the real outcome for Watson Specialised Tooling since moving off three disconnected systems and onto one Odoo ERP platform.

What changed:
👉 Three disconnected systems became one and no more piecing together the full picture of the business from separate platforms.
👉 A system migration with almost zero disruption, balances reconciled within three cents on day one.
👉 Barely a support call needed since go-live, it just works.

For a third-generation family business closing in on 50 years, that is the difference between running the business and the business running you.

And tbh we are pretty stoked about this. Check out the case study - https://www.willdooit.com/case-studies/watson-specialised-tooling

See how a 50-year-old manufacturer consolidated 3 legacy systems into one Odoo ERP, improving operational efficiency and eliminating reconciliation risk.

If you are running Odoo v16 or earlier, the 25% legacy surcharge has probably already shown up in your renewal conversations. We have been talking through this a lot with clients and the gut reaction is usually "right, time to upgrade". But honestly, that is not always the right call.

A few things to think through first:
👉 How customised your instance is.
👉 Your compliance exposure (payroll, PEPPOL, STP Phase 2).
👉 Where you are hosted (on-prem, Odoo.sh or Online).
👉 Whether you genuinely have project bandwidth in the next 12 months.

And before any of that, there is a quick bit of maths worth doing that tells you roughly when an upgrade pays for itself in avoided fees alone. Check out the formula and the rules of thumb in this useful article.

Should you upgrade Odoo or pay the 25% legacy surcharge? A practical breakdown of break-even maths, compliance risk and customisation cost to help you decide.

Most businesses don't plan to fall behind on their Odoo version. It just happens. Soon you are more than three versions behind and the pressure to upgrade starts to build.

We won't go into the benefits of getting onto the latest Odoo version too much, there are plenty. But if you are looking to upgrade across versions, there are a few things you really need to know, such as:

👉 There are no shortcuts. Odoo upgrades move version-to-version. The further behind you are, the more staged the path.
👉 Migration scripts cover standard Odoo. Nothing else. Custom modules, third-party apps, integrations are separate work. Make sure you know which one you are actually paying for.

Our lead developer James Bos shares more in this very useful article, click and have a read 👇

Upgrading Odoo across multiple versions is more complex than most businesses expect. Here is what you need to know and how to get right before you start.
