Colourful sunshades give a regional school a welcoming face.

At Swan Hill Specialist School in regional Victoria, WHDA designed a steel-framed sports court as a utilitarian metal shed, its facade enlivened by brise soleil powder-coated in primary colours. The materials follow the school's existing palette of red brick, cement panels and metal roofing. A glazed garage-style door connects the court to a student-run cafe, opening the two into one gathering space for community events. A second stage added a library and learning hub while retaining 75 per cent of the existing structures.

Folded aluminium and terracotta wrap a children's hospital in Westmead.

The Wattle Building at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is a 57,000-square-metre acute care facility designed by Billard Leece Partnership. Custom aluminium and terracotta modular panels wrap the concrete structure, with folded geometric aluminium in orange and blue-grey tones that catches changing light and shadow through the day, a reference to the nearby waterways. High-performance glazing and insulation improve thermal performance and comfort. At ground level a striped canopy marks the KidsPark entrance forecourt, and inside, inpatient units are grouped into neighbourhoods of 12 single rooms.

Engineered timber in the business park

The Bond by fitzpatrick+partners is a six-storey engineered timber office building in Norwest, a suburban business park around 30 kilometres from Sydney. It brings together 10,500 square metres of office space with health consultation and treatment rooms, a childcare facility and ground floor retail. The site was once an early brickworks, making the bricks for the growth of the suburbs north of Sydney Harbour in the 1950s. The building is the first of three to edge a food and beverage plaza precinct.
