Episode 14: We came up with 15 different paths. Some surprised us. - Listen Now

Someone asked us a deceptively simple question:

"If you had to make $1 million, how would you do it?"

Start a business?

Buy one?

Property?

Shares?

Build something online? Or back an opportunity most people haven't noticed yet?

The interesting part wasn't coming up with ideas.

It was realising how differently we viewed them.

Some paths look incredibly attractive until you consider the capital required.

Others look boring - until you run the numbers.

Peter and I sat down and worked through 15 different ways to make $1 million.

And, importantly, which strategies we'd actually put our own money behind.

There were a few disagreements.

And that's probably where the conversation gets most interesting.

If you've ever wondered how you'd build a $1 million from scratch, this one is worth your time.

P.S. Before you listen, pick your #1 strategy. Then see whether Rod or I can change your mind.

๐Ÿšจ Director Penalty Notices (DPNs): Don't Ignore Them. ๐Ÿšจ

If you're a company director, a Director Penalty Notice (DPN) from the ATO is one piece of mail you can't afford to put aside.

A DPN can make directors personally liable for unpaid company obligations, including:
โ€ข PAYG Withholding
โ€ข Superannuation Guarantee (SG)
โ€ข GST (in certain circumstances)

Many directors mistakenly believe their company structure protects their personal assets. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

โฐ Timing is critical. The options available to you can depend on when the liabilities were reported and when the DPN was issued. Delaying action can significantly reduce your ability to resolve the situation.

At Eventum Optimum, we work with directors, accountants, and legal professionals to navigate complex business challenges and identify the best path forward.

If you've received a DPN or you're worried your business may be heading in that direction, don't wait.

A petrol station can generate $4 million a year and still make almost nothing from selling fuel.

That catches a lot of people by surprise because petrol isn't really the businessโ€”it's the reason customers stop. The real profit comes from:
โ€ข Coffee
โ€ข Food
โ€ข Convenience purchases
โ€ข Car washes

It's a great reminder that the product bringing customers through the door isn't always the product generating the profits.

In the latest episode of Good Bad Business, I joined the team at Apickle to unpack the petrol station industry using our MOAT Framework. We explore what really drives profitability and answer the question: is a petrol station a cash-generating business or a capital-intensive trap?

I'd love to hear your thoughtsโ€”what's a business model that most people completely misunderstand?

๐Ÿ† Employee of the Month โ€“ July: Crystal

This month, we are proud to recognise Crystal as our July Employee of the Month for her outstanding contribution, dedication, and commitment across both Eventum Optimum and Naked Accounting.

Crystal wears many hats within our group of businesses. As Eventum Optimum's Registrations & Security Manager, she ensures our clients' registrations, ASIC compliance, and corporate records are managed with precision and care. At Naked Accounting, she has stepped into the role of Operations & Compliance Manager, while also leading all of our marketing initiatives across the group.

Since taking on her expanded operations role, Crystal has embraced the additional responsibilities with professionalism, confidence, and a positive attitude. She has managed competing priorities and tight deadlines with ease, while ensuring our Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance requirements have been implemented and maintained to a high standard as we transitioned into the new legislation.

Crystal has consistently demonstrated an exceptional work ethic, outstanding attention to detail, and a willingness to take on new challenges. Whether she's streamlining internal processes, supporting our teams, managing compliance obligations, coordinating marketing campaigns, or helping deliver exceptional client experiences, her reliability, adaptability, and commitment have made a significant impact across the entire business.

Her resilience, proactive approach, and genuine care for both our team and our clients do not go unnoticed. Crystal leads by example every day and has been instrumental in supporting one of the biggest operational transitions our business has undertaken.

Thanks to Peter for having me on the Good Bad Business podcast. It was a fantastic conversation exploring one of the world's most interesting business models โ€“ Snap-on.

Most people think Snap-on sells tools.

I'd argue they sell something far more valuable:

Trust. Relationships. And a business model built around their customers.

The real genius isn't just the quality of the tools โ€“ it's the distribution model.

The customer doesn't go to the store.

The store comes to the customer.

Every week.
The same truck.
The same driver.
The same relationship.

That's more than customer service โ€“ it's a competitive advantage that's been refined over decades.

In this episode, Peter and I discuss:

๐Ÿ”ง Why the iconic tool truck is the heart of the business.
๐Ÿ’ฐ How financing became a key driver of Snap-on's success.
๐Ÿ“ˆ The earning potential and realities of owning a Snap-on franchise.
โš ๏ธ The challenges facing owner-operators today.
๐Ÿค Why this is ultimately a relationship business that just happens to sell tools.

One takeaway really stood out:

The truck is the shop. The relationship is the moat.

There are lessons here for every business owner, regardless of your industry.

Thanks again, Peter, for the opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and hope listeners take away a few ideas they can apply to their own businesses.

๐Ÿ’ก Payday Super Is More Than a Payroll Change... It's a Cash Flow Change

From 1 July, businesses need to be aware of the upcoming transition to Payday Super, which will require superannuation contributions to be paid much closer to each pay cycle.

For many businesses, this isn't just an administrative change, it has the potential to significantly impact cash flow, working capital, and overall business planning.

At Eventum Optimum, we help business owners prepare for changes like these by:

โœ”๏ธ Reviewing the impact on your business cash flow.
โœ”๏ธ Identifying potential financial pressure points before they become problems.
โœ”๏ธ Strengthening your business systems and planning.
โœ”๏ธ Developing practical strategies to improve cash flow and resilience.
โœ”๏ธ Helping you stay ahead of regulatory changes that affect your business.

Businesses that plan ahead are far better placed to manage change than those forced to react.

If you're concerned about how Payday Super could affect your business, now is the time to have the conversation.

Eventum Optimum is here to help you protect your business, strengthen your cash flow, and prepare for what's ahead.

๐Ÿ“ข AML/CTF Regulations Are Coming, Here's What It Means for You!

From 1 July 2026, new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) regulations have come into effect across Australia.

As a result, you may notice some changes when engaging with Eventum Optimum.

You may be asked to:
โœ”๏ธ Verify your identity.
โœ”๏ธ Provide additional information about your business or the services you require.
โœ”๏ธ Update your details from time to time.
โœ”๏ธ Complete documentation that wasn't previously required.

These changes are now a legal requirement for many professional service providers and are designed to help protect Australian businesses and the financial system from money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crime.

We understand these additional steps may seem unfamiliar, but they form part of our commitment to meeting our regulatory obligations while continuing to provide you with the highest level of service.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we implement these new requirements and thank you for your continued trust in Eventum Optimum.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ New Episode Alert: Dry Cleaners โ€“ Hidden Gold Mine or One Stain from Disaster?

It was great spending time with Fabs, Marijana, Karlene, Darin and Peter discussing an industry that many people overlook but few truly understand.

Most people think dry cleaners clean clothes.

The reality? They manage risk, reputation and trust.

Customers hand over wedding dresses, designer suits, luxury garments and family heirlooms, expecting them to be returned in perfect condition every time.

In our latest Good Bad Business episode, we explore:

๐Ÿ”น Why dry cleaning is really a trust business
๐Ÿ”น The hidden risks most buyers never see
๐Ÿ”น How pickup and delivery is changing the industry
๐Ÿ”น Whether a dry cleaner can realistically generate $1M+ in revenue

One takeaway that stood out:

"A dry cleaner can look highly profitable right up until rework, claims and idle labour show up."

A great reminder that the numbers never tell the whole story.
