I’ve noticed something lately that feels strangely vulnerable to admit.
I’ve become a little insecure about the question “Sooo what do you do?”
Which is mildly hilarious, because I am probably more certain of who I am than I have ever been in my life.
But what do I do?
F**k. How long have you got? 😂
I own and run Airbnbs.
I invest.
I’m building wealth.
I have a psychology background.
I’m obsessed with human behaviour.
I’m starting a podcast.
I love conversations about identity and money and relationships and becoming and why we do the weird s**t we do.
I’m building things that don’t quite have names yet.
And somewhere along the way, I started feeling like I should be able to package all of that into one neat little sentence that makes immediate sense to a stranger.
I noticed myself wanting a better answer 🫣
Something impressive enough.
Clear enough.
Legitimate enough (that feels s**t to admit out loud)
And underneath that, if I’m really honest…was a tiny little wobble of…
Will you understand my value if I can’t explain it quickly?
There it is 🫠
Because I think for a long time I’ve been very good at being known for something.
There was safety in that.
A role. A title. A lane.
But right now I’m in this strange, beautiful in between where the life I’m building is bigger than any one of the labels I’ve previously used.
And maybe the discomfort isn’t that I don’t know who I am. Maybe it’s that I know who I am, but I’m still learning to let that be enough before everyone else understands it.
Maybe one day there’ll be a beautifully concise answer to “what do you do?”
But, for now… apparently it’s
“Quite a few things actually. Do you want the 30 second version or should we order another bottle?” 🍷
And actually... I think I’m becoming pretty comfortable with that.
