One of the best ways to understand the value of drones in agriculture is to start small.
• 𝗔 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗿𝘂𝗻.
• 𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗽.
• 𝗔 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱-𝘁𝗼-𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀.

You don’t need to overhaul an entire operation to see where the technology fits or where it can save time, reduce inputs, or improve visibility.

The biggest difference usually comes from getting accurate information early and making better decisions from there.

Skills nobody tells you you’ll need as a drone pilot 🚁

Flying is only part of the job. A drone pilot also needs to:

Most people picture drone work as standing in a paddock flying all day.

No two weeks are ever the same, and honestly, that’s one of the best parts of the job.

A drone can be ready to fly… and the job still might not go ahead.
Why?

Because in a lot of drone operations, timing and conditions matter just as much as the aircraft itself.

In w**d spraying, wind can completely change whether a job can be carried out safely and effectively. Season matters too.

A big part of commercial drone work is understanding when conditions are right - and when waiting will lead to a better result.

One of the more overlooked parts of commercial drone work is 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀.

In spray operations:
Pilots need to understand how different herbicides behave under changing weather conditions. Wind, temperature, and humidity can all influence application effectiveness and drift risk.

In wildlife and environmental surveys:
Operators also need to accurately identify species from aerial imagery and understand what they’re actually observing in the field.

The drone may be the technology people notice first, but the quality of the outcome often comes down to the operator’s understanding of the job itself - not just their ability to fly.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟬𝟬𝗸𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝟱𝟬𝟬𝗺𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝟮 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆.

Steep terrain. Unpredictable weather. Long days just getting into position.

This was part of preparing land for tree planting in a carbon project, so precision mattered.

Not every job is straightforward so we had to adapt to the terrain, work with the weather and make sure we stayed consistent over long distances.

And just getting it done.

These are the jobs that test your systems, and your patience.

A lot of people don’t realise the two different types of drone licences in Australia 👇

𝗥𝗲𝗣𝗟 (𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲)
→ This is for the pilot
→ Like a driver’s licence
→ Lets you fly different types of drones (under 25kg)
𝗥𝗲𝗢𝗖 (𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲)
→ This is for the business
→ Allows a company to legally conduct commercial drone operations
→ Required for commercial work (over 2kg)
Think of it like this:

Both are essential if you’re doing serious commercial drone work. If you’re hiring a drone operator, it’s worth knowing the difference.

From a safety perspective, it's always beneficial to 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 see the area where we will be operating

Before arriving to the job, we run a desktop assessment using multiple data sources to understand terrain, access, and potential risks.

Conditions on the ground can shift quickly so we always reassess upon arriving on site because there are so many variables.

This approach means 𝗳𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 from day one.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲?

We use thermal cameras to find the heat signature. If we can't identify the species from that alone, we switch to a 𝗴𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗹-𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 and 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮 to confirm.

Every sighting is logged with exact GPS coordinates and a photo. It sounds simple. It isn't.
