One of the most common questions people ask about solar is: “What feed-in tariff will I get?”

Often that can be the wrong number to focus on.

Imagine growing vegetables at home. You have more than you need in the morning, so you sell the surplus to Coles for $1….

…Then that evening, you need those same vegetables again, so you go back and buy them for $28.

You probably wouldn’t spend much time trying to negotiate whether Coles pays you $1 or $1.20.

You’d be more interested in keeping more of what you grew. Thats why battery storage matters.

If you’re using the water as it falls, great. But once you have more than you need, you have a choice: let it run away for very little value, or store it in a tank and use it later when you’d otherwise be paying for mains water.

A lot of people understand solar ⚡ Fewer understand what happens when you add battery storage into the mix 🔋 .

During the day, solar generates electricity and helps power the site. If there is more solar than the site needs at that time, the excess can be stored in a battery rather than exported straight away for next to no feed-in-tarrif.

Later in the day, especially during the evening peak, when electricity costs and demand are often higher, that stored energy can be used to help power the site, reduce peak demand and lower reliance on the grid. Saving you money.

The grid still has an important role too. It supplies power when needed, and in the right setup, the battery can also support backup power and energy resilience.

Instead of thinking about renewable energy only at the moment it is generated, we can move that energy through time..

“Are there any grants available for Victorian businesses?”
Sometimes there are....

But the answer in 2026 is a little more interesting than simply finding an open government grant.

There are now a number of different incentives available to Victorian businesses and organisations, including Victorian Energy Upgrades, Federal renewable energy certificates, battery incentives and various finance options. Some of these can significantly improve the commercial case for a project.
