Recently, our Director, Edward McCartney had the privilege of presenting at Mintrac Industry Connect 2026 on a topic we are genuinely passionate about: “Turn Audits into Value – Practical Approaches for the Meat Industry.”
Too often, audits are seen as a necessary disruption. A compliance event or a last minute scramble.
My message was simple: An audit should never be a stress test; it should be evidence that your food safety management system is working.
We explored:
✔ What a food safety audit really is – a systematic, evidence-based process to verify compliance, assess effectiveness, and provide assurance.
âś” Why traceability speed and accuracy are credibility tests in meat processing.
âś” How to move from reactive correction to structured corrective and preventive action (CAPA).
✔ Practical ways to build an “evidence pack” that makes audits controlled and predictable.
âś” The importance of professional working relationships between sites and auditors, particularly in a landscape where experienced auditors are decreasing and workloads are increasing.
The discussion centred around this idea: If you treat audits as a once a year event, you’ll always feel under pressure, however if you build continuous readiness, audits become a confirmation, not a confrontation.
We also unpacked what makes responses trustworthy from an auditor’s perspective:
• Immediate containment
• Clear root cause
• Defined action plan with ownership
• Effectiveness verification
When those elements are present, confidence increases for regulators, customers, and senior leadership.
Thank you to Mintrac for the opportunity to speak, and to the industry professionals who contributed thoughtful questions and shared real operational insights from the floor.
Audits shouldn’t be feared. Handled well, they are one of the most powerful management tools available.
If you’re interested in strengthening how your site extracts value from audits, we are always open to a conversation.
