Ok, you are interested in attending a Qoya class but not 100% sure about it. It’s new, you’ve never heard of it, you’ve never done it before. I know how you feel, I found myself doing my second level of Qoya teacher training in New Zealand and had never been to a Qoya class in person, sounds crazy but I just knew it was for me). So trust me, I get it.
I wanted to share a few comments I have had from those attending my Qoya classes.

• “I didn’t know how much I needed to get out of my head and just dance. After your class I have such a sense of clarity around what’s going on in my life”,

• “I’ve been going to a counsellor for years and in just one class I have gotten so much more from it” (no, I don’t suggest leaving your counsellor)

• “ I was just so stuck from the trauma of my husbands accident and didn’t know how to move on, during your class (this was a class themed “Let it Go”, it all came to me and I feel like I can move forward and support him and my family how I need to”

• “Your class was amazing and just exactly what I need right now with what’s going on in my life”

• “My body has missed Qoya so much.”

Every Qoya class has a theme, this week it is “Let it Go”. We start with setting an intention and then work through a process of switching off to the outside world and focusing on yourself through movement. You cannot get it wrong, there are no levels to Qoya, just the simple practice of getting out of your head and into your body, knowing that you are doing it right when it feels good!

I invite you to try something new this Friday or Sunday. Something that is not hard or complicated, something that is fun, supportive and nurturing. Join me this Friday evening or Sunday morning at the South West Rocks School of Arts & Community Centre

The beauty of Qoya is that there are no levels to it. This means you can attend a class anytime, knowing that you are in the right place at the right time. Focusing on how the movement feels in your body and not how it looks allows you to get out of your head and into your body.

Qoya in South West Rocks!
Are you ready to get out of your head and into your body?
To move, relax, switch off and do something for yourself?
Yes? Well come and try a Qoya class!

What is Qoya??
“Qoya Inspired Movement emerged from a women’s circle in 2009, where the question being asked was, “How do I get out of my head and into my body?” Instead of looking at this from the perspective of fitness, where the options were going to the gym, yoga, cycling, etc. a deeper question was forming.
How do I move my body in a way that I feel like myself?
How do I take all the ways that I was first taught to be in my body and explore the opposite. Instead of focusing on how it looks, what if I prioritise how it feels? Instead of focusing on trying to change my body and experience, what if I offer my heartfelt presence to what is here now?” Rochelle Schieck

Qoya Inspired Movement is based on the idea that through movement we remember. We remember our essence is like nature; wise, wild and free.
Wise: calling from the wisdom of nature
Wild: the creative expression of dance
Free: enjoying being in our body through feminine movement.

There are no “levels” to Qoya. Each class has a theme and that is what is focused on in each class. Qoya is about getting out of your head and into your body. You know you are doing it right when it feels right!

In Qoya we have a saying, “come as you are and leave more of who you are”.

How true be this.

“If we surrendered
to earth’s intelligence
we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Instead we entangle ourselves
in knots of our own making
and struggle, lonely and confused.

So like children, we begin again...

to fall,
patiently to trust our heaviness.
Even a bird has to do that
before he can fly.”

― Rainer Maria Rilke,
Rilke's Book of Hours: Love Poems to God

Dragonflies
begin their journey
as nymphs
in the water.
In the muck.

This morning
I was reminded of the human body
and specifically the spine
and the structure
and the way we hold fear
the way we hold tension.

And the importance of somatic experiences
that support the human body
in unbecoming
so that it can become more.
Especially during times of change
when the world is coming undone
We too are called to this sacred opportunity
to come undone properly.

There is the chaos of coming undone
and spiraling in fear
and holding more tension
and checking out
and avoiding
and freezing.

Or there is the conscious
coming undone
through the dance
through massage
through chiropractic (preferably holistic)
and many more modalities
to support conscious unbecoming
for conscious becoming.

We do noone a service
if we stay locked in the nymph state for an eternity.

Let’s imagine then, Nymphs
and how miraculous it is
when those shells crack open
when they finally emerge
to meet air
and how those wings
when they first unfold
are like the first breath
after a deep dark sleep.

Truth be told:
Emergence is the most vulnerable
part of the life cycle of a dragonfly.

Bless the part in you
that has been a nymph.
It has served you.
Armoring and protection
and navigating the dark murky waters
is its own medicine.

And bless the moment
that the shell cracks
and something of the heart
escapes into breathing
and the body recreates its patterning
and becoming becomes
more and more
and more.

Two steps forward
three steps back.
Two steps forward
three steps back.

We expand
and we contract.

We move forward.
and we move back.

The problem in moving back
is that so often
we identify
with the backward motion.

When really,
our soul wants us simply
to grow in love.
To love
wherever we are
at all times.

If we cannot love
where we were
we can never love anyone else
who stands in that part of the journey.

We cannot move forward
in wholeness
until we hold ourselves
in all of our parts
in wholeness.

Next time you find yourself
in a backwards cycle
remember
the tides move forward and back
the moon waxes and wanes
the soul
expands and contracts.

It's as simple as that.
The power within you
is accessible
even when you feel small.

Loving yourself
in EVERY SINGLE MORSEL OF IT
is the most powerful,
act you can embody.
Things will expand again.
They will move forward again.
You will be okay again.
You already are.
