Multiclass Swimming
Today, my son attended his very first PSSA state championships for swimming. He was only classified (sb9) earlier this year, and I did it to put him on a level ‘playing field’ .
It was lovely speaking to some of the other parents in the multiclass events too, especially with the changes coming to the NDIS.
Being that my son as the same diagnosis as me (CMT1A), when he was asked if he has been classified for athletics, I laughed ! Our bodies hate physical activity and running is probably the thing we dislike the most. But, hey, he’s only 12 yrs old, so I’m going to look into it as he actually has a good throwing arm.
These are the things we can do for our kids to encourage them to find the intrinsic motivation to do their best and be rewarded for trying. Such a different world now to when I was in primary school in the 1980’s.

If you are looking for NDIS support, please reach out to me.

Another positive NDIS planning meeting today.
It was so refreshing to meet with a delegate who had clearly read the reports, asked thoughtful questions, and took the time to clarify important information during the meeting. A few key details had initially been missed, but once raised, they were included in the funding outcome.
This little boy is 4 years old and has Down syndrome. He had not had a planning meeting since his first plan at just 8 months old and is now attending preschool 2 days per week in an early intervention program.
We requested 348 hours and he was funded 314 hours, including 6 hours for an AAC AT assessment, as well as the full 8 hours of Support Worker support requested.
The delegate also clearly explained why music therapy was not funded, how the AAC process works, and even joked that I should go to the “naughty corner” for knowing too much NDIS terminology when I explained the link between the Therapy Assistant request, Support Worker supports, and the Reasonable and Necessary criteria.
The plan now needs to go through two further approval levels, so we wait patiently, but most importantly, the parent is very happy with the outcome and the support from Footprints Advocacy.

NDIS check-in or planning meeting coming up? Don’t go in alone.
These meetings can feel “quick”, but what’s said (and what’s recorded) can shape your next plan. Footprints Advocacy can support you to prepare, organise your evidence, and attend with you — so you have someone in your corner helping push for a plan that’s reasonable and necessary for your individual needs (because no two people are the same).

🏊‍♂️ Today, my son who has CMT-1A was assessed for multi class swimming. Due to my own experience, I ensured that he started weekly physio as soon as he was diagnosed 2 years ago. He is now strong where he needs to be to help his muscles grow and develop through puberty. It also means that he only qualified for breaststroke 😊. I’m so proud of the hard work he puts into his training to keep himself strong and without the NDIS he certainly wouldn’t be able to do physically what he can today as a 12 yr old.
If your child has CMT or any disability and you’re looking for support in obtaining a reasonable and necessary NDIS plan, reach out to me for support. Early intervention is KEY!

NDIS presentations have been next level this week! 🙌

Friday: I visited Moving Mountains Village and presented to 16 OTs. We had loads of great questions around therapy reports, helping participants (and parents) understand the NDIS process, and behaviour support.

Saturday: I had the pleasure of presenting at a CMT Coffee Catch Up — including one legend who drove 2.5 hours to be there! We spoke about how to apply for the NDIS, what evidence is needed, and what the NDIS journey can look like. We also touched on aged care options for people aged 65+.

If you’re a therapist or clinic owner and want your team to feel more confident navigating the NDIS, send me a message — I’d love to support your staff. 💬
