Have you ever heard of Baby-lead Attachment?
When you take a few steps to get you and your baby ready, you will see this amazing biological process that shows they are hard wired to seek out the breast.
1 - Get you and baby in a comfortable position that ensure you are both well supported. Use whatever pillows or cushions you need to help. Breast feeding cushions are great once you find your spot!
2- To help your baby achieve this, make sure they have had a nice big sleep but also give them time to fully wake so they are alert to search for the breast. You also want a happy and calm baby so if they are crying or frustrated, stand and rock or sway for a moment until they have calmed before your next attempt.
3- It has been well established that skin to skin contact is a must for your newborn baby. If weather permits, remove all upper clothing and find a nice private space to allow you privacy in confidence. Once latched, you can rest a blanket over you and your baby to keep you both warm.
4. Hold bubs upright to your chest and lean back. this will help keep you both close in contact.
5. This is where its bubs time to shine, give them time to let their instincts kick in unless necessary, try not to intervene.
6. Support your baby as you seen them making their way to your breast. You can also support their upper body without having to support their head. This will give them enough stability while still manoeuvring their head to follow their instincts. Finally, you may see them nuzzle in for a few moments until they burrow their chin into your breast and reach in with an open mouth to latch. This is when you may want to offer a firmer grip or closer to your body to give them support.
