Should you back up your air conditioning during a blackout?

My answer is usually yes, if that’s your priority.

A lot of people are told to only back up the essentials like lights, fridges and power points. But if your goal is comfort during a blackout, then air conditioning should be part of the conversation.

The key is designing the system correctly.

Can your inverter handle the load?
Do you have enough battery capacity?
How long do you want the air conditioning to run for?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

If climate control is a priority for your family, then your battery system should be designed around that from the beginning—not treated as an afterthought.

The best backup system is the one that supports the way you actually live.

Is a home battery worth it in 2026?

For many homeowners, the answer comes down to one thing:

How much solar energy are you wasting?

I regularly see homes exporting huge amounts of solar during the day while buying electricity back from the grid every night.

That’s an under-utilised solar system.

You’ve already paid for the panels. The problem is you’re leaking most of the energy they produce back to the grid for a fraction of what it costs to buy it back later.

A battery changes that by storing your excess solar and allowing you to use more of your own energy when the sun goes down.

The question isn’t whether a battery is worth it.

The real question is:

How much of your solar are you giving away every day?

A 22kW EV charger doesn’t automatically mean your EV will charge at 22kW.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is people choosing a charger based on the number printed on the box, without understanding what their car can actually accept.

Your charger can only deliver what your vehicle’s onboard charger is designed to take.

So even if you install a 22kW charger, your EV might only charge at 7kW or 11kW.

Before choosing a charger, make sure you’re matching it to your vehicle, your home’s electrical supply, and how you actually use your car.

The fastest charger isn’t always the right charger.

Thinking about installing an EV charger at home? Make sure you get the right one the first time.
