What is the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT)?
If you going to teach in an NSW public school, you are required to undertake an ELPT unless you completed all your qualifications in: the following countries: Australia, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the United States, New Zealand and Canada.
The most common ELPT is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
The test that would need to be taken is the Academic version.
The scores needed are:
A minimum score of 7 is needed in reading and writing
A minimum score of 8 is needed in speaking and listening
We encourage you to watch this video (https://youtu.be/3nrujcxJSNs) about how to prepare for an IELTS exam.
We recommend that if you have not sat an IELTS test before that you complete a practice test. Please note that if you decide to take this practice test this is voluntary (at your own cost).
IELTS will be paid as reimbursement if you are successful in gaining a contract with the NSW Department of Education (please note this is not your teach NSW number but a contract with a school allocated).
Please see the enclosed link for information on the IELTS practice test.
