Exit Advisory Group was at the (COSBOA) COSBOA National Small Business Summit in Sydney today, alongside the associations, policymakers and owners shaping small business in Australia. Our Managing Director, Simon Bedard, was there as National Chair of the Australian Institute of Business Brokers.

Good to hear the NSW Small Business Minister, Janelle Saffin, back more than 1 million business owners across the state, with a push to cut red tape and help local businesses tender for more than $40 billion in government spending.

There was plenty more across the day. Economists put productivity at a 60-year low and made the case that tax reform is long overdue, and there was real debate about how to regulate AI without holding it back. All of it feeds into what a business is worth, and the conditions an owner will face when they come to sell.

For Simon, the Summit is a chance to push the issue we care most about at Exit Advisory Group: helping owners get ready for the day they step away or sell, so the business they built doesn’t close for want of a buyer. Exit readiness, succession and acquisition finance are where our work sits.

And this is just day one. More from Simon and the team tomorrow.

Down at Darling Harbour today for the COSBOA National Small Business Summit.

A large share of Australia’s owners are approaching retirement, and many are counting on the sale of their business to fund it, without having started to prepare for it.

When a business doesn’t sell, it closes, and the cost falls on the local jobs and community around it as much as on the owner.

A few of the settings being debated here shape how it plays out. The tax an owner pays when they sell, the compliance load, and whether a buyer can get the finance to complete a deal.

As National Chair of the Australian Institute of Business Brokers, this is the work I care about, and I’ll keep raising it while I’m here.

I’ll pass on what’s worth knowing for owners as the two days go on.

Type 5 of 6: The Competitor

A competitor reaches out as a buyer, asking for your financials, top accounts, and pricing. Months later, the deal disappears.

Then you start losing pitches to them. Not everyone who asks to buy your business wants to buy your business.

Some just want to see inside it. Staged disclosure and proper buyer vetting exist for exactly this reason.
