Waiting for the perfect moment to sell? That moment rarely arrives on schedule. Save this one.

The owners who exit well are not the ones who picked perfect timing. They are the ones who were ready when a reasonable window opened. Preparation is the variable you can control.

Chapter 3 of Exit Like an Expert by Simon Bedard breaks down exactly what that preparation looks like.

A great bunch of meetings in Brisbane last week, back in Sydney this week. Rod H**e and I have spent time with staffing and recruitment business owners.

The conversations have been fantastic. Founders in this sector are asking questions about their growth, valuation and exit plans, and they want to talk to people who understand their industry.

Rod brings a depth of knowledge to this sector, he is highly respected. Together we are looking forward to creating strong outcomes for business owners wanting to drive up their valuation and exit successfully. Good week.

He tried to buy a competitor for $24M. Lost, the winning bid was $67M.

Instead of moving on, he called his banker and asked a simple question: “If you can get $67M for that firm, what could you get for mine?”

That one question started the whole exit.

That’s Greg Alexander on Episode 50 of the podcast.

Business owners always ask Simon: “When is the best time to sell?”

His answer is always the same. The best time is when there are more buyers than sellers. Supply and demand, nothing more complicated than that.

Whether you feel 100% ready is almost irrelevant when serious money is in the market looking for a home.

The most expensive exit mistake isn’t a bad deal. It’s starting too late.

Most business owners wait until they’re ready to walk out the door before they think about how to sell.

By then, the decisions that determine your valuation have already been made.

Exit Like an Expert by Simon Bedard covers what you need to do now, before you’re ready, so when the time comes you’re in the strongest position possible.

The single biggest pressure on Australian business owners right now is not inflation. It is staff.

Structural labour shortages have been building for five years. Finding good people is harder, and losing them is easier. Add a new layer of workplace regulation on top, and staff management has become the defining challenge of running a business in Australia today.

As Warren Hogan puts it: the old saying was “great business if it wasn’t for the customers.” The new one is “great business if it wasn’t for the staff.”

This clip is from our bonus episode with Warren Hogan, Chief Economic Advisor at Judo Bank. Watch the full episode on your favourite platform:

Revenue growth and realised value are not the same thing.

A business doing $10M revenue with its largest customer at 60% of that revenue is worth significantly less than one with its top customer at 8%. Same profit. Very different risk profile. Very different multiple.

Chapter 5 of Exit Like an Expert breaks down exactly what buyers are assessing using the VALUE360™ framework, financial performance, growth system, fulfilment system, people and leadership, and operating system.

The businesses that achieve strong multiples are not always the ones with the highest revenue. They are the ones that understand what drives valuation and what drags it down.

Buyers do not see your business the way you do.

You see the years of effort, the relationships built, and the potential still ahead. A buyer sees what the business can deliver once you step back and how much risk they are taking in the process.

These four questions are what they work through every time. Swipe through and be honest with yourself about where your business sits on each one.

If every business gets corporatised and we’re all just employees, what does that actually mean for us?

Small business isn’t just an economic unit. It’s what keeps communities alive.
