Some communities take years to understand from the outside.

This one I grew up in. Multigenerational families, travelling Australia together, campfires at the end of the day. It's unlike anything else.

I grew up at the show. My mum did live product demonstrations. By 13 I was up on stage doing it myself.

What I learned there: how to pull a crowd, build an offer, layer value, get the sale. I didn't have language for it then. But it was direct response marketing, and it's still the foundation of how I think about eCommerce today.

The tools change. The fundamentals don't.

Most haven't tried this yet.

Save this one. It's the simplest explanation of CRO and A/B testing I can put together, and it's probably the most profitable thing to get your head around before spending another dollar on traffic.

My parents set me up with my first business when I was 7. A box of slap bands, a debt to pay back for the stock, and rent for the spot next to one of their rides.

Before I sold a single one I had to figure out exactly how many I needed to move just to break even. I didn't know it was called break-even analysis. I just knew I had bills to cover.
I didn't break any sales records. But I came away understanding inventory costs, fixed costs, and margin per unit before I was in high school.

From my experience, that's the stuff a lot of founders underestimate when they're trying to scale. The product and the customers come naturally. The unit economics don't always get the same attention.

Send this to a founder who's growing fast but may not fully have their numbers dialled in.

The sales formula I use today I didn't learn from a course. I learned it on stage at the show when I was 13.

Here's how it maps to eCommerce:
Hook: Strong opening that stops someone mid-scroll. That's your ad creative and headline.

Value build: Layer the features and benefits. Don't mention price until the value is obvious. That's your product page.

Offer stack: Big promise, free gifts, scarcity, risk-reversal, social proof. That's your reviews, trust signals, purchase notifications.

Upsell: At the cashier table on the way out. That's your post-purchase sequence.
Already mapped. Already tested for decades. We just moved it online.

I had a coaching session this morning that hit me hard.

I've been so focused on building the business that I kind of lost sight of the most important part: the people building it with me.

There's a real difference between managing someone's output and investing in their growth. I've been doing more of the first than the second lately.

Ask most people to describe their ideal customer and you get something like: women, 25 to 45, works full time. Going deeper on this is what separates the brands that really thrive from the ones that just get by.

I grew up on a travelling show, then as a teenager moved into selling products via live demonstration in the pavilions.

Most of what I know about marketing came from there, not from any course or book.

Are you earning less from your ads for the same spend?

Meta CPMs rose between 8% and 38% in 2025 depending on your industry. That part's pretty much out of your hands.

What I've found is there's a lever a lot of brands aren't pulling that doesn't require a cent more on ads. And it's probably not what you think.

The average store converts at 1-2%. Top performers hit 5%+. Same traffic, very different results.
