Last weekend our clocks went back an hour, marking the end of summer and closing of long light nights. In perfect synchronicity and whilst adding insult to injury, I started to feel the beginning of a cold. Maybe it was the cooler wind blowing in from the balcony, maybe that we'd put the "Winter Doona" on the bed for the first time or maybe that I'd put the heating on at night and it felt sooo good. My body responded in kind, wanting to curl up in blankets, light some candles and do as little as humanly possible.
I did my weekly shop and a lovely lady next to me asked for my advice on what kind of chicken to get. She was making chicken noodle soup and was one of those little old ladies you immediately warm to, and instantly want her to invite you to dinner, to savour that all-nourishing soup.
I did the cowardly version and bought a packet of chicken noodle soup from the "International" aisle. I'd never seen it before or since, but the comforts promised from within were enough to make me put it in the trolley.
Today I made that soup, with a quick boiling of the kettle and pouring of powdered ingredients into hot water. And you know what? Instant comfort. Instant soul soothing. Instant gratification and feeling of being cosy.
Bring on Autumn. Bring on you early nights. Bring on the heater, and above all, bring on the chicken noodle soup.
Love
