Three stops, two hours apart, one very easy drive.

Fly into Atlanta, head north into Alabama, and swipe through for the route.

FORT PAYNE
Little River Canyon cuts a deep gorge through Lookout Mountain, and DeSoto State Park adds 70km of trails, zip lines and waterfalls like Indian Falls. Catch the sunset from Jim Lynn Overlook at Buck's Pocket State Park.

HUNTSVILLE, 110km northwest
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center holds the world's largest collection of rockets and space artifacts. Add Burritt on the Mountain for the views over Monte Sano, and Lowe Mill, a former textile factory now packed with artist studios.

BIRMINGHAM, 163km south
Walk the Civil Rights Heritage Trail, then 1,800 motorcycles at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum and two courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The Mother Road turns 100 this year, and Missouri’s stretch of it might just be the most unforgettable 480km of history in the South. 🛣️✨

Route 66 joined the federal highway network on 11 November 1926. A century later, Missouri’s original alignment from St Louis to Joplin is still lined with places that bring the Mother Road story to life.

📍 St Louis: Begin beneath the Gateway Arch (192m, the tallest monument in America), cross the historic Chain of Rocks Bridge, then make time for frozen custard at Ted Drewes, serving travellers since 1929.

📍 Stanton: Head underground at Meramec Caverns, welcoming road trippers since 1933. It’s a fitting stop in Missouri, the Cave State, with around 7,500 caves on record.

📍 Springfield: This is where the Route 66 story truly began. A placard on Park Central Square marks the exact spot where the name “Route 66” was proposed back in 1926.

📍 Augusta: Take the scenic detour to America’s first federally recognised wine region. Augusta beat seven Californian districts to the title in 1980, thanks to vines planted by German settlers in the 1830s.

And the centennial celebrations are only just getting started!

The Festival of Nations comes to St Louis on 29–30 August, with free entry and 80 countries represented. Then, on 7 November, the official Route 66 Centennial Celebration arrives at Route 66 State Park.

11-13 September | Bristol
Bristol Rhythm & Roots celebrates 25 years, with stages lining the street that straddles Tennessee and Virginia — the birthplace of the legendary 1927 Bristol Sessions.

15-19 September | Nashville
AmericanaFest brings 165 shows to downtown across five nights. New this year: Dolly Parton’s Songteller Hotel, opened in June with a museum, rooftop bar and live music.

From 14 September | Pigeon Forge
Dollywood’s Harvest Festival runs through 31 October, with a 12-metre pumpkin tree and thousands of illuminated carved pumpkins. USA Today named it America’s best fall event.

Don’t miss Great Smoky Mountains National Park while you’re there, America’s most visited national park, with more than 12 million visits last year and no entrance fee. Just grab a $5 parking tag if you’re staying longer than 15 minutes.
