The Australian government has today released their "Voluntary AI Safety Standard". Based on the AS ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard, this standard focuses on 8 voluntary principles, and 10 specific "guardrails" around the safety, security, and reliability of AI.

These principles are obviously aspirational, and the announcement today stresses the voluntary nature of this standard and its guardrails, however it also includes the intent to regulate some 'high-risk' AI use cases.

Given the extensive, and ever-growing list of regulations that Australian businesses must comply with, it will be interesting to see how organisations choose to adopt and demonstrate compliance to these guardrails.
