EBS Restoration have been undertaking woody w**d control along a section of the Sturt River (Warri Parri) in the City of Onkaparinga area. Some w**ds, such as this Fraxinus angustifolia subs angustifolia (Desert Ash) have required EBS Restoration staff to employ the use of an elevated work platform, to allow the safe removal of woody w**ds in areas where access is restricted.

The Sturt River is considered a significant urban waterway and is one of the main tributaries of the Patawalonga River. It was used by the Indigenous Kaurna people as a link between the hills and the sea.

Since 2015 EBS Restoration has undertaken environmental restoration works within the Southport dunes system for the City of Onkaparinga. Works include woody w**d control, herbicide spraying and revegetation. Two highly invasive w**d species are present within the dune system, these are Trachyandra divaricata(Dune Onion W**d) and Ehrharta villosa (Pyp grass).

Snake or Lizard?

This is a good question to ask... at first glance this looks like a snake, however the Burton's Legless Lizard (Lialis burtonis) is more closely related to geckos then snakes!

When trying to spot the difference between a snake and a legless lizard, look at the shape of its face. A Burton's Legless Lizard has a wedge-shaped snout that sets it apart from both snakes and other types of lizards. This species of lizard also sports a pair of obvious ear openings on either side of its head.

These lizards may look like snakes, and can hiss and rear when threatened, but Burton's Legless Lizards are not dangerous. They are a widespread reptile and occur across virtually all habitats from desert sand-ridges and gibber flats to woodlands. The Burtonʼs Legless Lizard is a lizard specialist, feeding mainly on skinks, geckos, dragons and small snakes!

Halganias are represented by over 26 species within Australia, however just three occur in South Australia. Halgania Cyanea (Rough Halgania) is a perennial shrub, up to 60cm high, which is densely covered with hairs. The species name relates to the cornflower blue of the petals which really stand out in contrast to the dominant greens and dark greys within the Mallee habitats it primarily occupies.

While most commonly observed on sands within the Yellabinna, Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and Murray Mallee regions, it is also found within all other regions of South Australia as well as all other mainland states. Some of the best places to check these out around Adelaide is in intact patches around Monarto in the south or within road reserves in the Freeling area to the north.

Keep a look out for this species, a few weeks following our first Autumn rain!

Coastal ecosystems are very susceptible to direct human activity such as foot-traffic and human-induced pressures such as grazing by feral pests. Coastcare involves activities aimed at managing those impacts and rehabilitating existing damage.

EBS Restoration provides coastcare services to anyone with responsibility for coastal dunes and associated ecosystems such as samphire. Clients include private landholders, local councils, government, natural resource management boards and coastal friends groups.

We love seeing the positive difference that coastcare work makes!
