Why Every Employer Needs a Solid Employment Agreement

Still hiring staff without a written employment agreement? You’re not alone — but it’s a risk you can’t afford to keep taking.

Here’s why a written agreement matters:

Clarity on the Package

It’s not just about the hourly rate or salary — the agreement should clearly outline how the total package is structured. That includes base pay, superannuation, allowances, and any additional benefits.

Valuing Extra Benefits

Offering perks like rural accommodation or a vehicle? These have a monetary value and must be agreed upon and documented — not just assumed.

Protect Yourself & Your Team

A signed agreement gives your employee a clear understanding of what they’re getting, and gives you something to reference if things go pear-shaped down the track.

The Award requires it

Many Modern Awards, including the Pastoral Award, require a written agreement before employment starts outlining their classification, applicable rate of pay and terms of engagement. This becomes more vital too where you're varying conditions or rolling entitlements (like overtime or leave loading) into a flat rate or annualised salary.

Bottom line: A handshake isn’t enough. A written employment agreement protects both the business and the employee — and it’s a key part of being a compliant and trustworthy employer.

Labor Wins – What It Means for IR and SME’s

Following Labor’s re-election, their industrial relations agenda is set to continue — with a strong focus on wage growth, union power, and added employee protections. While this is great news for workers, there’s been little done to improve conditions or reduce red tape for small and medium businesses which account for more than 70% of the employment market.

Many of the recent and proposed changes — like multi-employer bargaining and sector-specific wage deals — are targeted at larger businesses and industries like aged care, meaning they won’t directly affect most SME’s, but you still need to be prepared for the flow on effects.

What do you need to do?

With EOFY just around the corner (and the minimum wage review to be completed in the next 6 weeks), it’s time to get your ducks in a row — are your contracts, pay rates, and policies still up to date and aligned with the Fair Work Act? While nothing will drastically change today or even next week it’s always a good time to make sure you are compliant.

Stay tuned for more info.

Heads up for Farm Owners and Managers!

Just in case you missed it (and let's be honest, most people have) — there’s a big change coming that will have a real impact on agricultural businesses.

From 1 April 2025, under the Pastoral Award 2020, entry-level employees (FLH1) can only stay at that level for 6 months — not 12 months like before.

After 6 months, they must move up to FLH2.

Progression to FLH3 and FLH5 after 12 months and 2 years remains the same.

This change is about recognising skills earlier — but it also means you'll need to be on top of your classifications, pay rates, and promotions to stay compliant.

If you’re not sure how this affects your current team (or your next hires), reach out — I can help make sure you’re covered.

Are you aware of your responsibilities as an employer to prevent sexual harassment, discrimination, and victimisation?

Did you know you have a positive duty to actively prevent them?

In simple terms, this "positive duty" means employers must focus on preventing these issues before they happen, not just reacting afterward.

Legally, you’re required to take proactive steps to stop harassment, discrimination, hostile environments, and victimisation in the workplace or in work-related settings.

Without these measures, you risk investigations, fines, and reputational damage.

But by having them in place, you show your commitment to a safe and happy workforce.

The struggle is real—giving constructive feedback is hard.

It can be uncomfortable, awkward, and mostly stressful. No one likes feeling like the “bad guy,” especially when you genuinely want to help the people you're working with. However avoiding feedback is far more damaging in the long run.

Feedback is essential for growth—whether it’s helping someone develop their skills, improve performance, or just adjust their approach. It’s not about being harsh; it’s about being honest and supportive to help both individuals and teams thrive.

But if you dread having those difficult conversations, I’m here to help. As someone who’s seen the impact of timely, effective feedback, I can take on those tough conversations for you and make sure they’re handled with care.

Don’t let fear hold you back from giving your team the guidance they need—let’s chat about how I can support you.
