My Story, Your Future - National Skills Week 2026 is the perfect time to share the stories of South Australians working across the mining and resources sector and the different pathways that have shaped their careers.

Shane is a Senior Geologist working with a uranium mining company in South Australia. Originally from Malaysia, Shane moved to Australia at 16, completed Year 12 and went on to study at the University of Adelaide.

After initially planning to pursue a career in petroleum engineering, Shane found his way into the resources sector through university networking opportunities and an internship with a uranium mining company. From there, he progressed into a graduate role and Production Geologist before gaining experience across exploration, uranium and gold and progressing into his current role as a Senior Geologist.

When asked what advice he would give someone considering a career in mining, Shane shared:

“The soft skills, the work ethic and the attitude automatically puts you in the top 30%.”

He also highlighted the importance of staying humble, learning from others, self-reflecting and being willing to adapt throughout your career.

Thank you to Shane for sharing his story and helping others discover the many different career pathways available within South Australia’s mining industry.

This is just a snippet of Sammy’s story! Watch the full interview and discover more about her journey into mining in the link below.

My Story, Your Future - National Skills Week 2026 is the perfect time to share the stories of South Australians working across the mining and resources sector and the different pathways that have shaped their careers.

Sammy is a Support Specialist and Apprentice Field Mentor in South Australia, where she supports apprentices throughout their training, development and wellbeing, helping them build successful careers in the mining industry.

Sammy’s own career journey shows that there is no single pathway into mining. After working as a jillaroo in outback South Australia, she entered the mining industry in an entry level nipper role before progressing into her current role.

When asked what advice she would give someone considering a career in mining, Sammy shared:

“Keep an open mind, be willing to learn and say yes to opportunity, even if it feels outside of your comfort zone. Turn up with a positive attitude, have a strong work ethic and don't be afraid to start small. Many successful careers in mining begin with entry level roles and grow from there.”

Thank you to Sammy for sharing her story and helping others discover the many different career pathways available within South Australia’s mining industry.

🏎️ F1 meets mining.

With F1 more popular than ever, we see the speed, technology and engineering on the track. But how often do we think about where the materials behind it come from?

Copper, aluminium, lithium, titanium, iron and nickel are just some of the mineral resources that contribute to the technologies used in F1 and in our everyday lives.

This short New Scientist video, produced in collaboration with Komatsu, explores the journey from the mine to the grid and the connection between mining, technology and Formula 1.

It’s a great reminder that what happens at a mine site can have a much bigger connection to the world around us than we might realise.

wrapped up Sunday and with Geologists, Geophysicists and Hydrologists in Shortage and identified as one of 38 occupations critical to the clean energy workforce and achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (Jobs and Skills Australia - Job Atlas) it was an ideal opportunity to bring together education professionals to explore great practice and opportunities to increase engagement and access to earth science and geological pathways from school to higher education.

With 120 delegates from Australia and overseas convened in Adelaide - the energy was high! It was great to see so many teachers taking advantage of this great PD opportunity and inspiring presentations.

From the Hallet Cove site visit on Friday, to workshop presentations on Saturday and strategic planning on Sunday the event lay a strong foundation for future collaboration.
