Hi everyone! Absolutely delighted to be a recipient of a George Robertson Award this year. Managed by the Australian Publisher's Association, the Awards recognise distinguished service to the Australian publishing industry and are presented to industry professionals who have dedicated at least 30 years to publishing. Congrats to the other nine recipients for 2026 - it's a great list of industry colleagues so I'm truly delighted to be in their company.

We are so pleased to be working with Elizabeth Ann Macgregor on her forthcoming book 'The Power of the Real: How MCA Australia became the world’s most visited contemporary art museum' (Sydney University Press, October 2026).

'The Power of the Real' chronicles Elizabeth Ann Macgregor’s transformation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia from near-bankruptcy into a world-class cultural institution.

When Macgregor was appointed director in 1999, peers warned her off the museum, its city, and even its country. Not without reason: the MCA was mired in a battle for control that reflected Australia's complex cultural politics.

Drawing on her experiences bringing art to the wider public – driving a travelling gallery around Scotland and leading Birmingham’s acclaimed Ikon Gallery – Macgregor relates what an outsider encountered on her way to becoming an insider. She reveals the bold strategies that revitalised the MCA: free access, team building and collaboration, community engagement and political negotiation – amid intense public scrutiny and scepticism. While navigating funding challenges and a major building expansion, Macgregor shows how her belief in the power of art to shape society helped create an institution loved and respected by artists and the broader public.

Part memoir, part cultural blueprint, 'The Power of the Real' offers vital and candid insights into leadership, resilience and the intersections of art, politics and public life.

Great to hear Sinophone Australia editor Craig A. Smith talk to Philip Clark on ABC Nightlife.

Historical research in Australia has mostly been undertaken in English, but English language speakers and writers were not the only people to document this nation's history.

As a multi cultural settler colony, with a huge array of languages spoken, as well as those of indigenous nations, a new book looks at the rich trove of fresh translations and analysis.

Sinophone Australia is published by Sydney University Press and is out now.

‘Perhaps the most valuable contribution of Sinophone Australia is its reminder that history is never finished. With old documents uncovered with patient and often meticulous archive work, we now get a glimpse of what these forgotten or silenced voices sound like. Even familiar stories acquire new dimensions. For Australian readers, the book offers a rare opportunity to see the country from a different vantage point.

You do not need to speak Chinese to appreciate the significance of that achievement. In an age when opinions about China are plentiful but nuance and complexity are often in short supply, Sinophone Australia provides something increasingly rare: historical perspective.

It is an accessible and at times fascinating contribution to our understanding of Australia’s past and ourselves.’

WA readers, did you catch Jo Trilling's recent conversation with Saskia Beudel on ABC Radio Perth Afternoons for World Bicycle Day on the 3rd June?

They discussed Saskia's latest book, 'Peaking: One Hundred and Eleven Days on Two Wheels', published by Monash University Publishing and in bookstores now.

The conversation explored endurance cycling, the challenge of tackling the Victorian Alps, the physical and mental demands of long-distance riding, ageing, resilience, and what it means to push beyond your perceived limits.

It's a thoughtful discussion about adventure, determination and finding new possibilities through challenge.
