I am so appreciative when a client offers me a cuppa. This one was mid-session as my client needed a break. Others give you one as you walk in the door because they’ve been anticipating your arrival. As a woman who grew up with a manual coffee grinder attached to the wall (first thing dad put up after we moved to Australia) – coffee is definitely a big part of my life! 😁😂

There is so much news about fast fashion and slow fashion and reusing textiles that one of my followers was inspired to repurpose their mum’s woollen jumpers into a little cozy blanket. Gorgeous greys, greens and purples. As you can see from the slides – 4 jumpers have been hand-stitched together. What you can’t see is that the arms of two jumpers have been tucked away inside the jumpers to help create the oblong shape. Such a cute and creative way to re-purpose woollen jumpers. And the creator of the blanket let me know that if they want to use the jumpers again, all they have to do is unpick the stitches holding them together ☺️.
I absolutely love that people are thinking about creative ways to re-use and re-purpose textiles. 💚👕

Why am I smiling? Because I have this amazing community of people around me that are supporting me and my business. As a sole trader it can get pretty wild out there! So much to learn! And I am like a sponge - always looking to grow & understand more. Last week I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Amy from Bush Biz Boost at the Business Victoria bus that came to town. Mind exploded! So I'm letting you know that not only am I a professional organiser and a decluttering expert, but also build websites in my spare time 😅😆!! There's a blog, there's videos, there's information galore - even Noodles pops up a couple of times! Check it out www.tsdecluttering.au ☺️🤗

I was reminded about the power of sound to bring back memories. Today I had a standard MRI - it’s a thing I get every year for a checkup, and as I was lying there in the dark with my headphones on daring not to move, I was listening to the radio and Jack Johnson came on. It sent me back in time to when my two were little and loved Curious George and loved looking over Lego catalogues for hours together, sitting on the couch or in each other's bedrooms pondering over all these Lego kits. It was such a lovely trip down memory Lane. A little bittersweet because they're both a lot bigger now - they're both taller than my husband and I - but it showed me the power of music and sound, and then I thought about the other senses, taste and smell, and touch, and how they store all these memories for us.

It also reminded me that we don't always have to keep objects around our house, we don’t have to fill our homes with things from people that we've lost or times that have passed. There are so many other ways that memory is stored.

One of my treasures is a recipe. It’s for apple crumble. I use a recipe I was given 20 years ago by my husband’s aunt, and every time I make it, it takes me back to when we visited her in Canada and her twin boys. I think they must’ve been like 2 or 3 years old. They had constructed this whole obstacle course that ended up with them launching themselves onto the couch – like little Supermen in flight. It was hilarious! And so joyful.

Music and food. Such simple yet powerful things. And a beautiful way to store memories – and they show that it doesn't require us to keep homes filled with objects of times from the past or people that have gone just so we can remember. We can be safe to let go of something. You've got all these other senses that help you remember as well.

How's everyone's Saturday?
We are having a quiet night in after hubby drove up and down to Melb for a concert yesterday (he saw The Descendents), and I had a farewell for a dear friend. So tonight I wanted a quick-ish easy-ish recipe, and one that would use up the jar of sun-dried tomatoes lurking in the fridge! So I'm trying this recipe for Marry Me Chicken from Bobby Berk with homegrown basil from seedlings I got from Park Lane Nursery
(I've popped the photo of my efforts in the comments ☺️)

After each session with a client, I park on the side of the road and dictate notes to myself. They’re not perfectly formatted, but they help me remember what happened. Below are my notes from a session with a new client. It’s my raw take. And re-reading my notes those original feelings still hit me - this client had been overcome with grief, and it was reflected in their home. Life can supremely suck at times. And sometimes we need some help.

“today I got home and I felt like I really made a difference. today I helped a client. their kitchen had become completely covered in rubbish. they are suffering from severe grief. They were surrounded by all the belongings of the people who've passed away and it was all too much and they couldn't get into their kitchen. They couldn't even eat. I couldn't get to the sink so we worked together. We cleared out everything and then I scrubbed that kitchen bench and the sink and the stove and now they're able to eat in there again. grief is such a big thing to go through. It's so hard for people and you feel lost in it sometimes. And that happened to this poor person but I think they're going to come out the other side. I think I'm the first step and I know it'll get better. We did lots of talking. That was super lovely! And I gave them a hug at the end when I left.”

The day after I got a text message letting me know they had cooked in their own kitchen. I was so bloody proud of them (and I shed a few tears because, well, because it felt like the start of a new life for this amazing human being).

Just walked past the op shop and they have a super cute green coat in the window. And it's my size! Do I want it? Yes! Did I get it? 😔No because I have enough jackets. Damn the practicalities of being a professional organiser!!

No sagely advice today! Just a super quick vid after a remark from a client who was feeling overwhelmed by their kitchen. They were feeling frustrated that their kitchen counter looked messy even though they’d done the dishes! Makes sense. Not all dishes can be hidden in the dishwasher. We all still have stuff that needs to be handwashed. And we move it from one side of the sink to the other side of the sink. Even though it’s all clean it’s still a big pile of stuff. The quick fix? Throw a clean tea towel over it! And why does this work? Because now your brain clocks only one thing, instead of a pile of lots of things. It seems silly – but trust me it works.
Go on – give it a try and let me know what you think.
