Planning to launch your own fashion brand? Before setting the launch date, make sure you understand the journey required to get your garments there.

Idea → Develop → Sample → Fit → Refine → Produce → Then launch.

Product development doesn't always happen in a perfectly straight line. Samples may need changing. Patterns may need adjusting. Fabrics may behave differently than expected. Another fitting or sample might be required.

That's not necessarily something going wrong. That's product development.

Karen's advice after more than 30 years working in the fashion industry is simple: Don't approve a garment because your launch date is getting closer. Approve it because it's ready.

“How do I start a fashion label?”

It’s a question Karen gets asked all the time.

And if you have a great idea but don’t know what happens next, you’re certainly not alone.

Starting a fashion brand involves much more than simply finding someone to manufacture your clothes.

Before you get anywhere near production, there can be a whole development journey:

Idea → Research → Product Development → Patterns → Fabrics → Tech Packs → Samples → Fittings → Revisions → Production

And it takes time, planning, patience and a realistic budget.

Which one is right for your fashion brand?

It’s a question we’re asked regularly, and the answer is different for every brand.

Australian manufacturing can provide closer collaboration, smaller production runs, faster communication and greater visibility throughout the process.

Offshore manufacturing can offer larger production capacity, specialised factories and potentially lower unit costs at scale.

But there’s one thing that applies whichever path you choose:

Get your product right BEFORE you manufacture it.

Patterns. Sampling. Fit. Tech packs. Fabrics. Production preparation.

We’ve seen brands rush offshore believing it will automatically be cheaper, only to encounter fit problems, quality issues, delays and expensive mistakes.
