🚨 Being told your role is redundant doesn’t mean you’re powerless.
When you’re sitting in a redundancy meeting, it can feel like the decision has already been made and there’s nothing left to discuss.
But before you quietly accept the paperwork, ask:
🔍 Is my role genuinely no longer required?
👥 Is someone else going to perform substantially the same work?
💬 Was I properly consulted before the final decision was made?
🔄 Were suitable redeployment opportunities genuinely considered?
💰 Have all of my contractual and legal entitlements been included?
📆 Is my notice period correct?
🏖️ Have my accrued leave and other outstanding entitlements been calculated properly?
📄 Am I being asked to sign a deed or waive potential claims?
Depending on your circumstances, there may be more to question, clarify or negotiate than you realise.
You could be leaving money on the table through:
💵 An incorrect redundancy calculation
💵 Missing notice or contractual entitlements
💵 Unpaid bonuses, commissions or incentives
💵 A stronger negotiated exit package
💵 Outplacement, career support or an agreed reference
💵 Changes to the wording of the announcement or separation documents
And sometimes, what has been labelled a “redundancy” may not meet all the requirements of a genuine redundancy.
That doesn’t automatically mean the process is unlawful—but it does mean it may be worth getting independent advice before signing anything or agreeing to the proposed terms. ⚠️
A redundancy can move quickly, but you’re allowed to pause, read the documents and understand your position.
You don’t have to be difficult.
You do need to be informed. 🧠✨
