PNG, Indo, Sols: Interesting insights from The Lowy Institute across two recent articles - 29th A-PNG Ministerial Forum reflections and Indonesian upcoming 2024 elections - as well as the timely book launch of 'Helpem Fren' on the Solomon Islands (today). These countries are Australia's three largest bilateral aid partners in terms of annual ODA budget allocations.

IWD2023 From The Field: Today, 8th March is with the theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” . Did you know: Only 63% of women use the internet (69% for men) (ITU, Nov22); By 2050, 75% of jobs will be related to STEM areas yet women hold 1 in 5 AI positions (WEF Report); A study revealed 38 percent of women had experienced online violence (2022 Gender Report).

We wanted to share with you views on this IWD2023 theme from key women in our DevDAS network in the Indo-Pacific. Our thanks to Nyn (Samoa), Bweman (Kiribati), and Meilany (Indonesia) for sharing, and their and others' efforts to embrace gender equality in innovation and tech. Not just today, but beyond.

World NGO Day 2023: Did you know on 27th February annually, World NGO Day is celebrated in more than 89 countries and over six continents? The day honors all civil society actors who fight for human rights, respect for democratic values, and the rule of law. At DevDAS we've worked with numerous INGOs and local NGOs, CSOs, and FBOs for over 15 years across Indo-Pacific. We agree with the DFAT 2019 Statement on the World NGO Day site, noting NGOs' "positive change and inspiring results achieved with Australian aid." Thanks for the chance to work with you all. As it notes then (in 2019) 57 ANGOs delivered 450 projects across over 50 countries annually. Really considerable footprint and work.

Where is DevDAS working in Feb? Our four key projects this month span Indonesia, Australia, Indo-Pacific (7 countries), and the USA.

In Indonesia, we're working on GEDSI and activity planning design for Prospera, the flagship Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Indonesian Economic program. In Australia and Indo-Pacific, we're looking into mapping and aligning sector and donor interests for a private client. We're also assisting with comms and reporting for a significant DFAT initiative across the Pacific. For a US client, we're reviewing mutual opportunities and ways forward for their further engagement in Indo-Pacific.

Where are you working this month?

World Day of Social Justice 2023: This 20th February, we reflect on how social justice is only possible when all barriers that people face based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability are removed. This year's theme is “Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice”. At DevDAS we've been reflecting on how we can further advance this through our current assignments - promoting decent work (in INGO client work this Feb), gender equity (advancing this in our Indonesia economic work), and ways over 15 years we can keep bridging the gap, especially for marginalized communities. We're sure we could do much more, too. Food for thought.
