Basic Principles of .
Self-verification is a social psychological theory that asserts people want to be known and understood by others according to their firmly held beliefs and feelings about themselves. Now, what does it mean in the context of managing operations…? There have been many previous terms used to describe the process of testing conformance e.g. inspections, examinations, audits etc. Whilst all of these remain valid processes in verifying conformance or compliance, self-verification pivoted from that towards continuous improvement. In today’s rapidly changing world, where ‘’change’’ is the only ‘’constant’’ enterprises are employing complex management systems to ensure systematic management of safe and efficient operations. But, how do we know that these systems are enough, before it is too late and you have safety accident and/or major business loss at your yard. This is where self-verification comes into play engaging everyone into systematic examination of the quality of enterprise activities and aiding strengthening of key barriers and coding lessons learned back into management systems. There can be different levels of self-verification varying from site based tactical schemes up to senior level strategic reviews. There is no ‘’silver bullet’’ in designing and implementing a perfect system for self-verification, however most effectives ones are based on business focus and enterprise risk levels. The main secret in creating value from self-verification is establishing the right culture and atmosphere for people engagement and embedding into day to day operations of an enterprise.
