Fundación Cives supports the proposal for a European Agency for Citizenship Education. President Victorino Mayoral states:

“To ensure that the values of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights truly permeate the European reality, we need a greater commitment from the EU institutions to Citizenship Education. The creation of a European Agency would not only strengthen these values but would also allow more coordination, tools and shared knowledge to face together the serious challenges that threaten today our democratic coexistence.”

Ibán García del Blanco, Member in the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, supports the proposal for the European Agency for Citizenship Education: “Democratic societies need an active and illustrated citizenship. This is a common task that involves all of us. An Agency for European Citizenship Education will help to build a citizenship knowledgeable of the principles and values that constitutes our social and democratic European model.”

Thank you very much to everyone who joined our online conference “Enhancing citizenship competences in the EU” co-hosted by European Citizen Action Service (ECAS). The urgency of the need to activate and enable citizens to shape social and political life in the Union was illustrated by over 70 participants joining.

Today, we hosted a Workshop on participatory democracy and citizenship competences at NECE Campus. Many important questions were raised about how to establish a common understanding of what citizenship competences should be, how to monitor and test output and the process of citizenship education and the difficulty of access to citizenship education for disadvantaged groups of society.
