Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Workplace!

Given the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace, this World Economic Forum (WEF) infographic shows the job roles expected to be in demand and those expected to decline by 2030!

According to the World Economic Forum 2025 Report, “Technological change, geoeconomic fragmentation, economic uncertainty, demographic shifts and the green transition – individually and in combination are among the major drivers expected to shape and transform the global labour market by 2030”.

Other perspectives are that:
(i) AI is also restructuring workflows – Three years after the release of ChatGPT, its impact on the workplace is clear, with AI increasingly driving end-to-end redesign of business functions. Organisations now use AI to sort legal contracts, detect financial discrepancies and reconfigure how healthcare tasks are managed.

(ii) At the entry level, many routine tasks – reporting, ticket triage and invoice matching, for example – are being automated. This creates a challenge for traditional “learning by doing”, as foundational work that once gave junior employees experience is disappearing.

Students – Check your Institution’s Policies on AI and Academic Integrity!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to pose a challenge for higher education institutions. Consequently, clear expectations of students have been provided, particularly during assessment periods.

Here are seven(7) principles that learners should consider as they navigate the use of AI in their submissions.

Learners, check with your institution to ensure your submissions are not questionable and do not result in failure or the need to redo your assignment or exam!

Your academic integrity as well as the institution’s reputation matter!

Three in four chief technology officers say that artificial intelligence has proven to be a moderate or significant risk to academic integrity at their institution. Experts have ideas as to what can help.

Showing Ethical Behaviour – Educators and Learners

Students' assessments are under greater scrutiny, as they may use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve their submissions.

The ethical behaviour of students is of great concern!

So is the ethical behaviour of educators!

In this pictogram, Sarah Elaine Eaton, PhD. provides critical ethical principles to guide educators. Dr Eaton emphasizes the need for educators to declare the use of detection tools in their course outlines and to discuss them with their students.

Valda Alleyne Consulting advises that these detection tools should be included in the institution’s internal quality assurance processes.

During the external quality assurance review of higher/tertiary educational institutions, it is expected that the institution's Assessment/Examination Policies are provided to learners. The expectations of the higher/tertiary educational institutions should be clearly stated. Equally important, the institution's Assessment policies and procedures should be discussed with students, and they should be reminded to adhere to the expectations throughout the study period.

Ethical behaviour is a critical life trait that speaks to a person's character and may affect one's future!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) - What it is Not and Misunderstandings!

Are you curious, concerned, and eager to learn whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) will replace human intelligence in the workplace?

Here are two (2) insights regarding what AI is not and misunderstandings about AI:

"AI is not intelligence—it is prediction. With large language models, we've seen an increase in the machine's ability to accurately predict and execute a desired outcome. But it would be a mistake to equate this to human intelligence".
"This is clear when examining machine learning systems that, for the most part, can still only do one task very well at a time. This is not common sense and is not equivalent to human levels of thinking that can facilitate multi-tasking with ease. Humans can take information from one source and use it in many different ways. In other words, our intelligence is transferable—the 'intelligence' of machines is not."

AI Is Not Automation
"The most common misconception about AI is that it is synonymous with automation. In fact, the only shared elements between AI and automation are their reliance on data and their goal of streamlining convenience.
AI Is Only As Powerful As The Data You Give It!
AI is a process of collecting information (namely data), sorting it and learning from what is stored, enabling computers to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. The key is that AI mimics human intelligence. This means there has to be some type of planning, learning, problem-solving, knowledge representation, motion and manipulation, as well as sociable skills and creativity to a lesser extent. Simmering AI down to its fundamental elements is about understanding the importance of data and how we can train machines to synthesize, analyze and act on data as a human being could. Think of AI as an engine fueled by data: It consumes data, recognizes patterns in that data, learns from those patterns and can take action based on those patterns".
