Romania and Bulgaria are set to partially enter the Schengen zone on March 31, 2024, allowing passport-free travel by air and sea
However, land border controls will remain in place initially. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu confirmed this move, emphasizing the benefits for Romanians in the Schengen area. The Schengen evaluation process confirmed both countries' readiness, leading to unanimous approval for their accession. This step aligns with the Schengen rules, including cooperation on border controls and the Schengen Information System. While internal air and sea borders will see lifted controls, land border checks are still pending unanimous decisions
