Traditional SEO vs AEO. What's actually different in 2026

SEO gets you ranked.
AEO gets you answered.

In 2026, being answered is more valuable than being ranked.

Here's the practical difference, and why it changes how you should be creating content right now.

TRADITIONAL SEO — what it optimises for:

→ Ranking position in Google's blue link results
→ Click-through rate from the search results page
→ Traffic volume to your website
→ Keyword density and backlink authority

The goal: get the user to click on your result and visit your site.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) — what it optimises for:

→ Being selected as the source for Google's AI Overview
→ Being cited in featured snippets and voice search responses
→ Being referenced by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude when answering questions
→ Providing the clearest, most direct answer to a specific question

The goal: become the source AI uses to answer questions, whether or not the user clicks through to your site.

Why AEO matters more in 2026:

AI Overviews now appear in 20%+ of all Google searches.

When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates drop by an average of 58%.

That means: even if you rank #1, more than half your potential traffic is being absorbed by the AI answer above you.

The question is no longer just "are we ranking?"

It's "are we the source being cited?"

The practical content difference:

SEO content: "Here's a comprehensive 2,000-word guide to keyword research."

AEO content: Opens with a direct 2-sentence answer to "what is keyword research" → then expands with depth, data, and examples → structured with FAQ schema so AI can extract answers cleanly.

The structure changes. The depth requirement increases. The directness becomes non-negotiable.

The good news: you don't have to choose between SEO and AEO.

The best content in 2026 satisfies both simultaneously.

Rank in Google. Get cited by AI. Own both surfaces.

Which are you currently optimising for, and has your team started thinking about AEO yet?

Why most Google Business Profiles don't rank.

And it's not what you think.

I've audited more than 50 GBP profiles in the last 12 months.

E-commerce businesses. Dentists. Law firms. Marketing agencies. Local service businesses across 6 countries.

The ones that weren't ranking all had one thing in common.

It wasn't missing reviews.
It wasn't wrong categories.
It wasn't incomplete information.

It was this: Google didn't trust that the business was actually active.

Here's what I mean.

Google's local algorithm doesn't just ask "is this business relevant?"

It asks: "Is this business alive?"

A GBP profile that was set up once and never touched again looks, to Google's algorithm, like a business that might have closed.

No new photos. No recent posts. No new reviews being responded to. No Q&A engagement.

Just a static listing that hasn't changed since it was created.

Google rewards activity. Not perfection.

The 5 activity signals that matter most:

1. Photo uploads ➜ at least 4 new photos per month (interior, exterior, team, products/services)

2. GBP posts ➜ minimum 2 posts per month (offers, updates, events, news)

3. Review responses ➜ every review responded to within 48 hours, including negative ones

4. Q&A engagement ➜ answer every question in the Q&A section proactively

5. Business information updates ➜ even minor updates (holiday hours, new services) signal to Google that someone is maintaining the profile

I've seen businesses jump from position 8 to the local pack in 6 weeks just by becoming consistently active on their GBP without changing a single thing on their website.

Activity beats optimisation. Every time.

If your GBP isn't ranking, before you change your categories or build more citations, ask yourself: when did you last log in?

Drop your industry in the comments, and I'll tell you the specific activity signal that moves the needle most in your niche

I decided to run a simple experiment.

I searched the same query on Google and AI search.

The query:
"Best Skin Care Doctor Near Me Austin TX"

What happened next surprised me.
On Google, one website ranked #1.

Strong SEO.
Strong backlinks.
Strong authority.

But when I checked AI search...
The same website wasn't the top recommendation.

Instead, AI cited different sources.

Why?

Because AI doesn't evaluate authority exactly the same way Google does.

Google looks heavily at:

• Backlinks
• Rankings
• SEO signals

AI also looks at:

• Citations
• Brand mentions
• Trusted sources
• Direct answers

This doesn't mean SEO is dead.

It means visibility is changing.

Ranking #1 on Google is valuable.

But ranking alone may not be enough.

The brands winning in AI search are building authority beyond traditional SEO.

Because AI doesn't recommend everyone.

It recommends the sources it trusts most.

The big question is:

Would AI recommend your business?

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐄𝐎 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫

I spent the first 2 years of my career chasing rankings.

Every week I'd open Ahrefs, look at our keyword positions, celebrate the ones going up, and panic about the ones going down.

My clients were happy when rankings improved. Quiet when they didn't.

Then one client asked me a question that stopped me cold:

"Ainul, our traffic is up 40% this quarter. But our leads are down. What's happening?"

I didn't have a good answer.
I dug into the data.

We had ranked for dozens of new keywords, but almost all of them were informational. People searching for answers, not looking to buy.

We were generating traffic. Not customers.

That conversation changed how I approach SEO completely.

I stopped thinking about rankings as the goal.

I started thinking about the searcher's intent — and specifically, where they were in the buying journey.

Awareness keywords → they're learning. Useful for brand visibility. Rarely convert.
Consideration keywords → they're comparing options. Higher intent. Convert sometimes.
Decision keywords → they're ready to buy. Highest intent. Convert often.

The lesson:
Ranking for the wrong keywords is almost worse than not ranking at all because it creates the illusion of progress while your client's business isn't growing.

Now, before I build any SEO strategy, I map every target keyword to one of three questions:

1. Does this keyword attract someone who could become a customer?
2. At what stage of the buying journey?
3. What should they do after landing on this page?

If I can't answer all three, the keyword doesn't make it into the strategy.

Rankings are a means to an end.
The end is customers.

Never lose sight of that distinction

What's the most important SEO lesson you've learned the hard way? I'd love to hear it

Most business owners still think the customer journey starts with a click.

Increasingly, it doesn't

Before contacting a business, today's customers are researching on platforms like:

• ChatGPT
• Gemini
• Reddit
• YouTube
• AI Search Experiences

They're comparing options, reading reviews, validating businesses, and looking for answers long before they visit a website

By the time they reach your business, they've often already decided who they trust

That's why the businesses winning today aren't always the ones getting the most traffic

They're building:

✅ Strong brand authority
✅ Better AI visibility
✅ Trust across multiple platforms
✅ Higher-quality leads
✅ Better conversion opportunities

Whether you're a doctor, lawyer, contractor, painter, roofer, realtor, dentist, HVAC company, or any local business...

The question is the same:

Can potential customers find and trust your business where they're already looking for answers?

Because the future of growth isn't just about ranking on Google

It's about being visible everywhere your customers are searching

📍 Local SEO + AEO + GEO are no longer optional. They're becoming essential.

If you're a local business owner, let's talk about your online visibility and growth opportunities

10/06/2026

❓ Quick question...

If someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity for the best business in your industry, would your business be mentioned?

If not, you're missing visibility where more people are starting to search

Have you checked what AI knows about your business?

👉Most businesses don't fail because SEO doesn't work

They fail because they hire the wrong SEO

Before signing a contract with any SEO expert or agency, ask these 5 questions:

✅ Can you show real results?
✅ What does your first 90 days look like?
✅ How do you measure success?
✅ What's your link-building strategy?
✅ How are you adapting for AI search?

The answers will tell you more than any sales pitch ever could

A great SEO partner won't just promise rankings

They'll show a clear strategy, measurable outcomes, and a plan for the future of search.

Because in 2026, SEO isn't just about Google anymore

It's about visibility across Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and beyond

Ask smarter questions

Make better hiring decisions

Save yourself months of frustration and thousands in wasted budget.

👇 Which of these questions do you think is the most important?

😅 BETTER THAN YOUR EX.....

Before anyone takes that headline too seriously...
Here's what I actually mean

Most people are still chasing Google rankings.
I'm focused on building authority

Because search is no longer just Google.

People are now looking for answers on:
*️⃣ ChatGPT
*️⃣ Gemini
*️⃣ Claude
*️⃣ Perplexity

Google updates will come and go
AI search will continue to evolve.
But authority, trust, and expertise will always matter

That's why my focus is:

✅ SEO Visibility
✅ AI Visibility
✅ Brand Authority
✅ Long-Term Growth

I don't just help businesses rank
I help them build a digital presence that Google, AI platforms, and customers trust.

Good SEO gets traffic.
Great authority creates opportunities.

What's going to matter more over the next 2 years?
Google Rankings or AI Visibility?

How to build a 2026 SEO strategy that survives every Google update.

Google pushed 12 core updates in the last 24 months.

Every single one hit sites that were optimising for algorithms instead of people.

Here's the strategy framework I use, one that hasn't needed a major overhaul since 2023, regardless of what Google has thrown at us.

THE CORE PRINCIPLE

Google's updates don't change what they're trying to do.

They just get better at doing it.

Google has always wanted to surface the most helpful, credible, and relevant content for every search.

Every update is simply Google getting closer to that goal.

So the strategy is simple: build content and authority that would satisfy Google's ideal, not just its current algorithm.

PILLAR 1: Build real topical authority

Don't publish one article and move on.

Build comprehensive content clusters a pillar page supported by 10–15 satellite pages covering every subtopic and related question your audience might search.

When Google asks, "Who is the real expert here?" your site should be the obvious answer.

PILLAR 2: Make E-E-A-T visible, not just present

Experience. Expertise. Authoritativeness. Trustworthiness.

Google wants to see these signals clearly, not buried in your content.

Practically, that means:
→ Named authors with visible credentials on every article
→ Original data, case studies, and first-hand experience woven into content
→ Client testimonials, results, and social proof on key pages
→ Citations from credible external sources
→ A clear "who we are" presence across the web

PILLAR 3: Prioritise search intent over keyword matching

The sites that get hit hardest by updates are the ones targeting keywords without genuinely satisfying the intent behind them.

Before creating any piece of content, ask:
→ What does the person searching this actually want?
→ What format do they expect?
→ What depth of answer are they looking for?
→ What would make this page the definitive best result for this query?

PILLAR 4: Build authority that exists beyond your own website

Third-party mentions, citations, and backlinks from trusted sources.

Google is increasingly checking whether your authority is self-declared (on your own site) or externally validated (across the web).

PR, guest content, podcast appearances, and industry directory listings all contribute to an authority profile that no algorithm update can erase.

PILLAR 5: Build for AI search alongside Google

AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity — these are now part of the search ecosystem.

Structure your content to be extracted and cited by AI systems:
→ Direct answers early in every piece
→ FAQ sections with schema markup
→ Clear, consistent entity information across all platforms

The sites that thrive through every update are the ones that would still deserve to rank even if Google didn't exist.

Build that kind of content. Build that kind of authority.

Updates become irrelevant.

Marketing leads: how many core updates has your site been affected by in the last 2 years? Let's compare notes.
