That’s where the Jockey Pump comes in.

💧 A jockey pump is a small pressure-maintenance pump that maintains fire system pressure and compensates for minor pressure drops.

Why do we need a Jockey Pump?

Even when there is no fire, pressure can drop due to:

• Small leakage in pipelines
• Temperature changes
• Normal system fluctuations
• Minor pressure losses

The jockey pump automatically restores pressure without starting the main fire pump unnecessarily.

When engineers talk about fire pump capacity, one of the most important numbers you will hear is GPM.

💧 GPM = Gallons Per Minute

It tells us how much water a fire pump can deliver per minute at its specified operating condition.

🔹 500 GPM

A pump rated at 500 GPM is designed to deliver 500 US gallons of water per minute at the specified operating point.

🔹 1000 GPM

A 1000 GPM pump provides a higher water-flow capacity, depending on the requirements of the fire protection system.

Why is GPM important?

GPM is an important factor in determining:

💧 Required water flow
🚒 Fire pump selection
🔧 Pipe sizing
💦 Sprinkler & hydrant demand
📊 Hydraulic system design

⚠️ But remember:

GPM alone does NOT define a fire pump.

Proper pump selection considers:
