Against a backdrop of impressive growth, regulatory evolution, and recent crises in several full-fledged Islamic banks, leading scholars, regulators, bankers, policymakers, and industry practitioners convened in Dhaka on 28 February for a high-level roundtable discussion on the state and future of Islamic banking and finance in Bangladesh. The event was organised by IBFC–Thrive with Shari'ah in collaboration with IDLC Finance PLC through its Islamic finance window, IDLC Islamic. The programme brought together stakeholders representing banking, capital markets, Takaful, academia, accounting, and regulatory bodies. The roundtable aimed to facilitate informed, forward-looking, and policy-oriented dialogue within Bangladesh's Islamic finance ecosystem. The event also marked the formal unveiling of the second edition of Islamic Banking and Finance in Bangladesh: Annual Review 2025 (IBFBD 2025), published by IBFC–Thrive with Shariah.

Bangladesh Hajj Academy (BDHA), in collaboration with the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM), the Central Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh (CSBIB), and the International Islamic Research Foundation (IIRF), organized a National Seminar on “Hajj Financing for Pilgrim Welfare: Role of Islamic Financial Institutions and Economic Contribution” on September 16, 2025 (Tuesday) at the Officers’ Club Dhaka.

The seminar brought together distinguished policymakers, eminent Islamic scholars, senior bankers, renowned economists, business leaders, and academicians to deliberate on the contribution of Hajj financing to the national economy and the vital role of Islamic financial institutions in facilitating affordable and inclusive pilgrimage. The event was attended by more than 400 dignitaries.

Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain, Honorable Adviser, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while H.E. Mohd Shuhada Othman, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Bangladesh, honored the program as Special Guest. The seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Gias Uddin Talukder, Chairman of BDHA and CSBIB.

On behalf of BIBM, Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor (Selection Grade), delivered the Address of Welcome. The seminar was convened by Dr. Md. Mahabbat Hossain, C**A, CSAA, Associate Professor at BIBM, who also presented a keynote paper titled “Contributions of Hajj Fund to the National Economy and Facilitating Affordable Pilgrimage: The Bangladesh Perspective”.

The “Vision Ambassadors”, a distinguished business platform from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, comprising former ambassadors, academics, scholars, professionals, and businessmen, along with representatives from CSBIB, visited BIBM on February 10, 2025. The visit aimed to exchange views on the Islamic banking and finance landscape in Bangladesh.
During the session, I had the opportunity to present a set of proposals to the delegates. The discussions were highly interactive, providing valuable insights and fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas.

IDLC Finance PLC officially launched its Islamic Finance Window on January 21, 2025, at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka. The event was attended by approximately 200 participants, including Shari'ah scholars, representatives from regulatory bodies, business professionals, and bankers.

Mr. Md. Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, announced during the event that the central bank plans to establish a separate Islamic Banking Department. He expressed confidence that Islamic banks' market share is expected to exceed 70%, with conventional banks holding the remaining 30% in our Muslim populated country.

Mr. Chowdhury Liakat Ali, Director of the Sustainable Finance Department at Bangladesh Bank, disclosed that the central bank is preparing to issue a dedicated policy for Islamic banks and finance companies to support sustainable finance initiatives.

The Chairman, Managing Director/CEO, and other senior officials of IDLC Finance PLC reaffirmed their strong commitment to ensuring full Shari'ah compliance in their operational processes, highlighting their dedication to fostering ethical and sustainable financial practices.

We are pleased to inform you that BIBM is offering certification programs to enhance the expertise of professional bankers in specialized areas of banking and finance. The upcoming certification program titled “Certified Islamic Banking and Finance Professional (CIBFP) [Led by Global and Local Islamic Finance Professionals]” aims to strengthen the skills of bank executives involved in or associated with Islamic Banking and Finance. This comprehensive program comprises three (03) modules:

• Part-A: Online Module (08-week E-Learning program)
• Part-B: On-Campus Module (14-week Classroom-based program)
• Part-C: Virtual Interactive Sessions Led by Global Islamic Finance Professionals (06-week virtual classes)

Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) and INCEIF University have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on Islamic finance research, training, and academic programs. The MoU was exchanged between Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar, President & CEO of INCEIF University, and Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Director General of BIBM, on 22 October 2024 at the 19th International Shari'ah Scholars Forum (ISSF), witnessed by Senator Dato' Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Na'im bin Haji Mokhtar, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Religious Affairs of the Government of Malaysia.
