Reincarnation
A mosque, fundamentally, is a place of prostration—a space for surrender, contemplation, purification, and spiritual connection with The Creator. Located within a ship-breaking yard, the KSRM Mosque explores the relationship between fragmentation, transformation, and spirituality. The architecture draws from the surrounding shipyard landscape, where massive vessels are dismantled into fragments and reassembled into new forms. This process becomes a conceptual generator for the mosque, expressed through a composition of fragmented volumes, brick jaali, solid walls, and carefully framed openings.
The design seeks to create a sacred environment for reflection, purification, and spiritual connection, moving beyond conventional monumental mosque forms. At the heart of the design is an Articulation of the dual nature of human existence, expressed through the interplay of light and darkness, solidity and permeability, enclosure and openness. Solid walls establish moments of introspection and protection, while perforated brick jaali introduces filtered light, air, and visual depth. The contrast between these elements creates a constantly shifting spatial experience, allowing the character of the mosque to change throughout the day.
Natural light and cross-ventilation are integral to the spatial experience. Filtered through the jaali and glazing, daylight creates shifting patterns of light and shadow, reinforcing the mosque’s sense of contemplation and spiritual illumination.
Through a simple yet distinctive contemporary language, the KSRM Mosque transforms the fragmented character of its context into a unified sacred space—where the act of breaking apart becomes a metaphor for transformation, renewal, and transcendence.
