Bangladesh stands at a critical crossroads in its democratic journey.
Despite our aspirations for a robust democracy, a significant disconnect exists between political leaders and voters, especially in their voting behavior.
Historically, our society has been shaped by a clientelist political culture, where political leaders (patrons) offer money, gifts, or promises of power-sharing in exchange for votes from citizens (clients). This deeply entrenched practice not only undermines democratic values but also fosters a system of pervasive corruption. In this structure, multiple layers of brokers emerge, acting as intermediaries between leaders and voters, further eroding the integrity of democratic engagement.
This form of transactional politics is a slow poison for democracy—not only in Bangladesh but across many countries in the Global South.
To confront this challenge, we introduce DemPoll—an electoral strategy and consulting firm dedicated to restoring democratic integrity through citizen empowerment.
