Scientists have developed a device small enough to be implanted in the brain—smaller than a grain of salt—that operates using light instead of wires or batteries. It can function stably within living brain tissue and wirelessly record and transmit data from the brain.

Researchers at Cornell University have created an extremely tiny neural implant that can wirelessly transmit brain activity data from a living animal for more than a year.
Published in Nature Electronics, the research demonstrates that microelectronic systems can now operate at a much smaller scale than before. The device, known as a Microscale Optoelectronic Tetherless Electrode (MOTE), is powered by red and infrared laser light, which can safely pass through brain tissue. It transmits data from the brain by emitting tiny pulses of infrared light that carry encoded electrical signals from neural activity.
The device contains a semiconductor diode made of aluminum gallium arsenide, which harvests infrared light to power the circuit and generate outgoing signals.
The Cornell-developed neural implant is based on the size of a grain of salt. It measures approximately 300 micrometers in length and 70 micrometers in width. It is the smallest neural implant capable of wirelessly transmitting brain activity data. This makes it the smallest neural implant that can measure the brain’s electrical activity and then wirelessly send information from inside the brain.

মাইক্রোস্কেল অপটোইলেকট্রনিক টিথারলেস ইলেক্ট্রোড বা MOTE নামে পরিচিত এই ডিভাইসটি MOTE লাল এবং ইনফ্রারেড লেজার আলোর মাধ্যমে চলে।যা মস্তিষ্কের টিস্যুর মধ্য দিয়ে নিরাপদে যেতে পারে। এটি ইনফ্রারেড আলোর ছোট ছোট পালস নির্গত করার মাধ্যমে মস্তিষ্ক থেকে তথ্য পাঠায়।যা মস্তিষ্ক থেকে এনকোডেড বৈদ্যুতিক সংকেত বহন করে।ডিভাইসটিতে অ্যালুমিনিয়াম গ্যালিয়াম আর্সেনাইড দিয়ে তৈরি একটি সেমিকন্ডাক্টর ডায়োড আছে। যা ইনফ্রারেড আলোকে সার্কিটকে শক্তি প্রদানের জন্য সংগ্রহ করে এবং বহির্গামী সংকেতও তৈরি করে।

কর্নেলে তৈরি এ নিউরাল ইমপ্লান্ট লবণের দানার উপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরি।এটি প্রায় ৩০০ মাইক্রন লম্বা এবং ৭০ মাইক্রন প্রস্থের।এটি মস্তিষ্কের কার্যকলাপের তথ্য তারবিহীনভাবে প্রেরণ করতে সক্ষম সবচেয়ে ছোট নিউরাল ইমপ্লান্ট।এটি সবচেয়ে ছোট নিউরাল ইমপ্লান্ট যা মস্তিষ্কের বৈদ্যুতিক কার্যকলাপ পরিমাপ করবে এবং তারপর ওয়্যারলেসভাবে মস্তিষ্কের ভেতরকার তথ্য পাঠাবে।
